Who Is 'Undertime Slopper' And Why Should You Love Them?
The avant-garde of memes always trends towards the absurd and the surreal. Cutting edge content creators challenge audiences to expand their definition not only of what things can be "funny," but what language, images, and sounds themselves can communicate.
On TikTok, no account is quite as far ahead of the pack as Undertime Slopper. Whether you love it (as many fans declare they do) or hate it, you can't even begin to understand what's going on with it. But let's try our best to do exactly that.
What Is 'Undertime Slopper'?
Undertime Slopper is a TikTok account that posts videos featuring 3-D augmented reality models with non-sensical and absurdist stories. Often, the TikToks are pretty short, most are not over thirty seconds long. Recently, each ends with the same video clip of a man with a Southern accent saying, "I love Undertime Slopper."

What Does 'Undertime Slopper' Mean?
"Undertime Slopper" seems to be the name of the main character POV of the account, with recurring characters like various rocks, toads and random animals addressing the camera as "Undertime." It's unclear what the phrase means exactly, but the videos loosely describe the adventures of Undertime Slopper through a relatively normal-looking forest with wacky characters edited into it.

In the Undertime Slopper lore, the forest belongs to the all-powerful Albert, who seems to be negligent in doing his job of "turning on" different forest features such as streams and also seems to scare Undertime.

Why Do People 'Love Undertime Slopper'?
Undertime Slopper asks its viewers to contribute to the creation of new content by posting a clip of themselves saying "I love Undertime Slopper." Undertime Slopper then selects the best clips and edits them into TikToks. Undertime Slopper also has a series of accounts on other platforms.
During the recent "Battle for Undertime Castle," Undertime Slopper asked users to send in clips of themselves fighting an invisible enemy while saying the phrase, and then spliced them in to the battle as defenders battling a horde of menacing elves.

What Is 3-D Modeling?
3-D augmented reality modeling is a technology which enables users to render holograms of 3-D objects onto a person's view of the real-world. Undertime Slopper uses this software to make it look like, for example, a trash can is parked in front of a Monet painting, when in real life there isn't anything there.

Why Should One Love 'Undertime Slopper'?
Undertime Slopper's videos are deeply surreal and leave a lot of room open for interpretation. Like many other TikTok memes, they also use an obviously artificial and technologically-conjured series of effects (in this case, 3-D AR modeling and automated robot voices). There seems to be a dynamic tension between the naturalness and drabness of Albert's Forest, where most of the TikToks take place, and the obviously synthetic 3-D images edited into the TikToks.

Undertime Slopper seems to represent the way that, even as we each walk around in our familiar and boring environment, our rich interior fantasy world illustrates what we see. A regular old park becomes a forest full of talking rocks and toads, and a regular day becomes a surrealist romp.
