About

Japan Is Turning Footsteps Into Electricity is a copypasta meme about how Japan is purportedly using piezoelectric technology that turns footsteps into electricity, beginning, "Japan is turning footsteps into electricity! Using piezoelectric tiles, every step you take generates a small amount of energy." Instagram Reels users started posting the copypasta as the description for their videos as early as September 2025. It was further popularized in February 2026 when users started to take note of its usage, inspiring memes referencing the copypasta.

As the copypasta spread in late February and early March 2026, a meme emerged using the caption "People In Japan When Their Phone Dies," in which footages of characters walking or moving is edited together under the caption.

Origin

The "Japan is Turning Footsteps Into Electricity" copypasta is based on piezoelectric technology, which generates electricity through mechanical stress. According to publications like Parametric Architecture,[1] Japan has been testing floor tiles using this technology, which generate electricity every time they're stepped on.

It is unclear where the copypasta originates from. The earliest known use of a version of the copypasta is in the description of an Instagram[2] Reel posted by user __mahmudov1ch_ on September 23rd, 2025, garnering over 74,000 likes in five months. The post itself is unrelated to the copypasta.

The earliest known use of the exact, popular copypasta was posted in the description of a video by Instagram[3] user eliot.cw on November 9th, 2025. Again, the content of the post itself is unrelated to the caption. The post gained over 8,500 likes in three months. The copypasta reads:

Japan is turning footsteps into electricity! ⚡Using piezoelectric tiles, every step you take generates a small amount of energy. Millions of steps together can power LED lights and displays in busy places like Shibuya Station. A brilliant way to create a sustainable and smart city -- turning movement into clean, renewable energy 🌱💡

Purportedly, the caption is used as a way to manipulate the Instagram algorithm, which allegedly prioritizes long descriptions. This is speculative and unconfirmed.[3]

Spread

The copypasta continued to be used for Instagram Reels descriptions through early 2026 by Instagram[4][5] accounts like miaa_amv and dede_kozuki, with some of their videos gaining tens to hundreds of thousands of likes.

In February 2026, Instagram users began posting memes referencing the overuse of the copypasta. For example, on February 16th, 2026, Instagram[6] user redhatgifs posted a meme using a video of Aaron Paul accepting an award, captioned, "Japan if there was an award for turning footsteps into electricity," garnering over 300,000 likes in three days.
