Who, Or What, Is 'Glup Shitto?' The 'Star Wars' Parody Character And Its Many Memes Explained
With Obi-Wan Kenobi out now, it seems the Star Wars fandom is getting excited for the presence of the franchise's iconic character, Glup Shitto. "Now wait," you may be saying to yourself, "I've seen all nine-plus Star Wars movies, watched The Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, all that jazz, and I've never once heard of Glup Shitto."
Don't worry, you're not about to get your nerd Star Wars fan card revoked, you're just out of the loop on a meme that's been circulating on social media for some time and is recently seeing a resurgence. Let us tell you the tale of Glup Shitto in this handy explainer.
Who Is Glup Shitto?
Glup Shitto doesn't exist, in reality. He, she or it is the product of a Tumblr joke posted in 2020. In September of that year, Tumblr user gomjabbar joked about the Star Wars canon seeming impenetrable to outsiders by quipping, "Every time a new Star Wars movie or show is announced, all the fans are like "OMG Glup Shitto is back!"
The joke seemed to perfectly encapsulate what it feels like to be on the outside of a fandom looking at posts that make no sense, and it resonated with the Tumblr community. Thus, during the run of The Mandalorian, Baby Yoda was dubbed "Glup Shitto" until his proper name, Grogu, was revealed.
Glup Shitto is similar to other memes from the Tumblr community, such as Blorbo From My Shows, which have also poked fun at the inscrutability of fandoms. Now, many fandoms are joking about the "Glup Shittos" in their own preferred media, celebrating the minor characters who make small appearances to titillate diehards.

Why Is Glup Shitto Back Now?
Though the meme was at its peak in 2020 and mostly quarantined to Tumblr, it's begun spreading outside the community recently thanks in part to a Cr1TiKaL video where he talks at length about the meme and the high volume of Star Wars content out or planned to come out.
Furthermore, the fandom's continued excitement at minor characters making small appearances in recent Star Wars media has only further cemented the truth behind the original "Glup Shitto" post.

How To Use "Glup Shitto"
If you're a fan of a very minor character from a media franchise, that may just be your Glup Shitto. Having a "Glup Shitto" isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the phenomenon has become a point of contention in fandoms.
Some get exhausted with fans who merely look for minor characters and cameos instead of enjoying the stories on their own merits. Thus, it's become an insult, a way to parody fans who get too excited about minor, ultimately meaningless details that reference a franchise's canon.
Whether you have a Glup Shitto of your own or want to dunk on others for their Glup Shittos, you're now ready to enter the fandom discourse.
