What Is The 'Cancel Out A Vote' Trend?
In mid-October 2024, TikTokers began posting videos about "canceling out" the votes of people who support a political party that they do not. By "canceling out," these users mean that they plan to specifically vote for the party that has the opposite values that their target supports. In a roundabout way, this can be interpreted as making their vote moot, despite each party still tallying a vote.
Mainly, users are posting about canceling out their family members' votes. So, for example, if a person's father wants to vote red, they might vote blue just to "cancel out" their father's vote. While this trend started on TikTok, it's now begun to spread across social media, inspiring a lot of discourse.

How Is Canceling Out Votes Used In Memes?
On TikTok, where the trend got its start, users are posting videos where they dance to a song alongside a caption about canceling out someone's vote. Usually that person is a family member and nobody is off limits, from parents to spouses and beyond. Others are posting videos that celebrate their family for voting the same as them and not having to cancel out their vote.
The trend has now spread to X, where users are making similar posts about canceling out votes. One X user went viral for posting about how she and her partner voted red, resulting in more than a few quote-reposts about canceling out their votes by voting blue. Ultimately, this trend is just another way to fight about politics and understandably, it's sparking some heated debates online.
