What Is The Gas Station Sushi Copypasta? The Origin Of The 'You, Me, Gas Station Sushi' Video Explained

Gas station sushi may be a horrifying concept shunned and vilified in the public eye, but one copypasta takes the act of going on a gas station sushi date to its illogical extreme. First unearthed on Reddit in May 2020, the increasingly random train-of-thought-style Gas Station Sushi Copypasta went from the written word to viral video almost instantaneously.

The clip of a young boy narrating, "You, me, gas station. What are we getting for dinner? Sushi of course" inspired a series of animations on YouTube and TikTok in 2020, with the copypasta winding plotline providing ample fodder for artists to flex their creative muscles. Here's a recap of how the Gas Station Sushi Copypasta went viral.

What Is The Gas Station Sushi Copypasta, And Where Does It Come From?

The earliest known instance of the Gas Station Sushi Copypasta is a Reddit post from May 23rd, 2020, and it is a stream-of-consciousness style paragraph that goes from picking up sushi, being roofied, fighting a bear, and eventually flying into the sun.

You me the gas station. what meal are we having? Gas station sushi. H--- yes. Uh oh there was a roofy in our gas station sushi. We wake up in a sewer full of fish. H---y fish. What does that mean? Fish o---. The stench draws in a bear. Bear fight? Bare fists? Bare… Naked? I think so! We befriend the bear after beating it into a brawl. We ride it into a chucky cheese. Dance dance revolution! Revolution? Over throw the government? I think so! I black out again. I wake up and do a line. I white out, which i didnt even know could happen. I reincarnate as jesus. I turn into a jet and fly into the sun. I wake up and smoke a joint. I green out?? I wake up and i am the sun?? Oh no! Looks like the meth is kicking ijsjnjðommsooskauaajs rge snAAA AAAAAA AAAAAA

But arguably the most popular version of the copypasta is a video posted by YouTuber RASU, showing a man with his head pressed up against someone else as he recites the nonsensical paragraph to her. While the origin of the video is unknown, the audio from the clip became a template for future iterations of the meme.
