The internet took over.

But if you want a good discussion topic, think of one.

Ok then, what do you think of bronies who only like FiM because where fans of the original shows? I can't really judge them for their taste in cartoons, but I can tell the massive surge in popularity FiM brought to the series has given them enough confidence to come out about it.

The problem is, one of the biggest things one must get past to accept the brony fandom is to admit how awful the previous iterations where and clarify that FiM is not even remotely the same thing. Now someone going out and saying "I'm a grown man and I've always loved My Little Pony", that's just the kind of thing that gives ammo to the haters and doesn't really give us a good name.

Can we discuss this or is someone just going to post more contextless weepypasta and the whole thread completely ignores me again?

I've been paying attention.
I'm bored, so I was lurking.

This brony only likes FiM. I am already considered a freak in the world's eyes.

Well i personally hated the originals but i can see why some bronies would. IIRC most of them were forced into it by younger sisters, once you are forced into something enough you begin to enjoy it. I think they are the manliest of us all if they can come out and say "I liked the originals". Also, remember that they are probably the first bronies, most of them deserve all of our respect.

Man, it feels good to be back and take part in these discussions.

I'll try to answer.

As for the original shows, I assume you mean the previous generations and not Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home.

I believe we have discussed this multiple times before, but not in a way like this. I think everyone here knows the previous generations were pure rubbish. The previous generations were exactly the type of show like described in “The End of the Creator-Driven Era in TV Animation”, the article that started it all. It was shown in some video once as well (can't remember what video). The first generation was created as an adaption of the toys, made to give more popularity to the toys and raise the sales. This continued in the next generations and could also be seen in the toys they spawned, the cartoons only got worse however (style and voice acting). The previous generations also had a younger target audience, it was really directed to the "little girl".

Which brings me to generation 4, the generation we all love. This generation was made for a bit older audience, but they wanted it to appeal to older people (like parents) as well. Our fanbase was never intended to be created. The toys this generation spawned were an adaption of the show, not the other way like with the previous generations. This generation wasn't made to raise the sales, so more focus could be put on the quality. Which was also mentioned by fans quite often, how they loved the quality of the show. As well as the voice acting (not counting background). The characters here were also given a lot more personality, which is shown by the fact that a lot of people have a different favorite pony.

So basically: Where the previous generations were lacking quality and were more a rush in the making so they could air when the toys were still fresh, this generation got a lot more attention in the creation.

I thinks this explains why everyone loves this generation, but hated the previous ones. And everything Lauren Faust touches turns into awesome (thank you Monday).

Long time ago since I had some discussion.

And don't forget the most important part, anything Lauren Faust touches turns into awesome.

True, very true. We all have guilty pleasures after all (I freaking love all the "Earnest" movies), and them old-school bronies are incredibly lucky they don't have to feel ashamed about theirs anymore. So like shippers and R34 artists we shouldn't antagonize them, but we should make it clear to outsiders that they do not represent the entire fandom.

I think you're talking about CR's videos. But honestly, I have to agree with CR, the FiM fans do kinda need to lay off a bit on the older series since if it was not for them, we wouldn't have FiM in the first place.

It does take earlier generations to get where we are at times, and as CR said, if it wasn't for the earlier generations, we wouldn't have some of the things we do. After all, I think a portion of FiM's voice actors came from G3.

1st paragraph: Never thought about it too much. Watch what you want, and don't bring it to communities that don't want to see it. I imagine having a prominent fanbase that is like you in gender would help a person "come out" about liking FiM. But they'd probably still be pretty quiet about liking previous generations, because they wouldn't receive much more support from the strictly FiM-Brony community.

2nd Paragraph: The community of FiM lovers that gave rise to the moniker, "Brony," uses that as a point when declaring their love of the show to anyone who doesn't know of FiM. It'd be hard for a person that has always liked MLP to say that in regards to the FiM community or the population at large.

I'm glad you clarified the point about previous fans giving us a bad name. I thought you were insinuating that we should shun them or something. But it still sounds as if you hate what they represent and have something against them. Sounds like, I'll emphasize. Is this true?

EDIT:I'll keep this up so Gigatoast can respond, even though it's been clarified further and my questions been answered. Man, I type slowly…

With the exception of Discord's voice actor.

By CR, do you mean Cereal?

I think we should put a sign at the gates to the ponynet that says "Welcome to ponyland where everything is awesome" and under it put another sign that says "PS: don't judge all of us based on what a few of us do, that's not cool"

Well, of course Discord's actor didn't come from any of the previous generations.

Continue the discussion. I just noticed this video on the front page.

I lol'd. What is up with Pinkie's Cutie Mark?

I've seen that and I thought of Rent and Stimpy…

That reminds me, what is Zecora, well, other then a zebra, how are zebras different then horses, cause I myself have no clue.

A creator (might be Faust) did point out once that Zecora is the only non-pony with a Cutie Mark.

Besides that, I can't help you.

That doesn't necessarily warrant respect though, in fact the Michele Bay Transformers movies are a great deal more responsible for the eventual creation of FiM then G2 or 3 ever where. (obviously G1 was the first and therefore most important)

After G3.5 Hasbro had pretty much given up on the franchise, until the tidal wave of money generated by Bay's slow-motion-car-crashapalooza gave them the idea that they could reboot old dead franchises to cash in on the nostalgia junkies and introduce them to new generations. And thus, the Hub.

So if we are to agree with CR, then next time a Transformers movie comes out to continue to piss on the once great franchise, you shouldn't criticize it because FiM wouldn't exist without it.

Yeah, I know, but is there any actual difference? Cause are zebras actually equines? Cause I have no idea.

I never even noticed that Zecora had one. So the magic of ponies that grants cutie marks isn't unique to ponies.

Uh huh, whatever you say bro. The fact is, without previous generations, you wouldn't have this generation, and without G3, you wouldn't have a portion of the voice actors you do for G4, including my personal favorite, Fluttershy.

Well, I wouldn't think to hard about it seeing how they mentioned things like French clothes and Dutch food and how some of their cups have handles and such that they shouldn't.

Alright, time for me to head off to work. Just keep discussing the ponies and non-ponies and such.

My point is, bad things may lead to good things, but it doesn't make the bad things any less bad. You can still have a lack of respect for something but be grateful of what it eventually lead to.
