Oh man i've been and this shit is so..motherfuckin sweet.
@Popper
Can you try putting up your server again and check your firewall, I still cannot find your server.
Please stay on topic people.
I made a server, the IP is 165.154.93.188
Alright, I'm having issues here. The server isn't up, so I'd have to ask one of you to either host or walk me through the process again.
EDIT-Just go to Tim's server
EDIT- I'm getting nothing from that IP. Sure it's up?
I'm running vanilla tf2, so…yeah
Feel like a total dumbass, but can anyone help me?
@Popper
-connect 192.168.1.17…failed after 4 retries
You sure that IP is correct? Also what port are you using? Might be useful to include the port into the IP address. I see a lot of us are on steam right now but we seem to be waiting around
[edit]
Never mind. Sounds like Tim has a plan, Tim what's your current status?

Alright i need one of you guy's one of you guys on my friends lists to connect to the server so i can join because i can't figure out how to connect from IP.
Random's right. We can continue this conversation on Steam. I'll create a chat.
If you need my ID, it's on my page.

I think we already have a steam group, under the name KYM Brony Brotherhood. Maybe you guys should join that.
No then, the reason I'm here:

Oh btw, I have been searching and the first part of that Warhammer 40k comic is this:

That was entertaining. We need to go on TF2 servers like this more often. I wanna keep molesting everyone with my strange knife.

Team Fortress? Y'all got nothin', my computer will just lag the server into the ground. That is, if I didn't already miss the whole thing. And if my TF2 worked worth shit.
EDIT: according to Pyro's post at the same time as mine, I missed it. But I still love all of you.
Just gonna reinstall the whole thing while I sleep tonight. I'm so sick of it not working. I wish my computer weren't complete garbage.
Did someone say Daring Do is best pony? No? Well, I did.
If you guys want to play with just all of us next time i do have a TF2 server ready to go
Also:
Did anyone notice i was there?
@Pyro
Agreed. Sniper wars all always fun to do with me.
I got to figure out how to set up a game better, though.
Also, it seems that entire Discord origin comic is complete in the image gallery.
EDIT- That Discord origin actually provides a good turn on the alicorn discussion we had earlier a bit.
Awesome TF2 game guys, that was fun. I didn't think it would work due to my distance but even with 250 ping I still managed to get some good Scout action going on. Somehow managed to get several kills with the baseball
Connor kicks ass. He always seemed to lead the board
I got raped by a single spy every single damn time
Pony sprays were absolutely everywhere
And I laughed so hard when I got that single critrocket quaddruple kill on four of you guys…and then I got a 5th kill with a double critrocket. Really made my day, thank you
@Popper: You're about the only person I killed that entire time, cause the damn teams were to unbalanced. I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Maybe we could do this every Sunday. My computer nearly burst into flames when I got into a group of 5 or more though. Really, I felt I did the worst tonight. But half of that is because my sensitivity was off, I didn't have a mic, (I should be getting a new cord for my Turtle Beaches this week) and I suck at any playing any class except for Medic. I still died a lot cause the Heavies wouldn't protect me. I still enjoyed it nonetheless.
@Tim and RandomMan: Nice hustle tons of fun, next time eat a salad.
Well, that tournament on an open server we didn't own was immensely fun!
Except for me getting the team with unfair disadvantages a lot, but what are you gonna do? I had fun the few rounds I played as Heavy on Hoodoo, mostly because I made the cart the literal rape train.
Now, to get a late-night discussion going:
Where would you place Equestria, generally, on a technological scale, and why it is there. They still have quills, lanterns, and other things from less technologically advanced eras. However, they also have electric ovens, a dam, whatever the fuck the Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 is, and other technology.
I seem to remember Lauren telling somebody that asked that the writers just threw in technology if it's useful to the plot, or if they've used it before. They don't have a rigid technology line, or something that could resemble a specific era.
Personally, I'd say the peaceful nature of Equestria, the magic it has, and possibly the wildlife, might lead to Equestria being in a more advanced version of the very early 1900s or very late 1800s, with more focus on 'necessity' technology, and less labor-saving and war technology. This is caused by their lack of violence and conflict, and the usage of magic to replace labor-saving.
What's that? I'm over-analyzing something that's confirmed to not have any truly analyzable material?
You're damn right I am.

Could magic be bottled and used as a viable substitute for electricity? If such a fantastically wonderful renewable source of energy were available, I think they would have just skipped the Indsutrial Revolution because they had no use for it. The dam wasn't necessarily used to generate electricity; maybe it was just making a resevoir.
Anyways, I see it as sort of a 1950's-modern times era, just with no need for a lot of the technologies developed during the period. Remember the 8-bit MLP ad: TVs and video games (at least 8-bit ones) are canon in my books.
EDIT: Fuck, I don't deserve this page get.
Page get for adventure with a seductive protagonist, even though I know it will come to nothing because Explosive's discussion is much more interesting!
@Explosive
Well, I'd say you're probably right on target. Seeing how they've haven't had any real armed conflicts, there's no need to build weapons of war (which explains their apparent lack of firearms so far). I'd say it's a classic fantasy setting.
They keep it's medieval-like-fantasy-story-setting with apparent use of cliches from one (A Princess ruling a kingdom; A maginificent palace in the mountains; absolute monarchy; nobility; etc…) but also use things that would appeal or add to it's magical feel (as you said, a dam, advanced technology, trains; hot air balloons; film cameras, etc.)
So my guess is that you can't really identify a certain time period (because there references to many), but can assume it's a fantasy setting with common cartoonish themes.
Well, that was fun!
117 points as a medic was quite entertaining.
Not too sure how I pulled that off, but cool nonetheless.
I just stood back and let Tim and RandomMan rip everything apart as heavies.
@On topic discussion
I thought this was a TF2 thread! *gasp
Equestria is just a giant mish-mash of time periods.
Canterlot is classic medieval feudalism, Ponyville looks like a 1800s era village, and they've got a little bit of 20th century tech sprinkled on top.
Standard cartoon fare, really.
Just use what's most interesting/useful.
I still want to know why their scissors have finger holes…
@Blue
Actually, the dam is definitely for electricity.
It has the little power stations down at the base.
Seeing as how Twilight was able to repair it so easily, maybe she built it!
She needs it to power her experiments!
Luna's face when seeing how I play TF2:
I tried. I think I may need a bit more practice, considering this was maybe my third time on that game.
As for the discussion of pony tech…
You know, the one thing I wonder is why the two trains are different. The Ponyville Express (or whatever it's called) seems to be steam-powered, so why was the Appleoosan train being pulled manually? Was it broken somehow? At first I thought it was because of Faust's reluctance to use technology that was too advanced, but Feeling Pinkie Keen kind of makes that argument seem unlikely.
Well I hope you guys had fun..because with in 5 minutes I was kicked for high ping and was unable to join again because server was full…I RARELY play team fortress 2 and I figured that it would a excellent time to just spend time to actually play with my internet buddies but NNNOOO the damn server didn't let me in and possibly when it does everybody would have been leaving…fuck it…ima go…
Have something pony related to at least make a attempt to keep thread relevant:
Just came back from Derpibooru. Many Ponibooru users have migrated there and are currently adjusting to their new home. A bunch of images are being dumped onto the site right now as well. I bet after a few days, many new users will be adjusted to their new home and like it.
@Ric
Yea I saw that (I was a little too busy being a Scout to reply to you though). I thought you lived in the US though? You should have had the same ping as most everyone else. Yet for some reason you had a rediculous 800 ping.
Me and Randomman live oceans away from the server but we still had a manageable 200-250 ping so it wasn't distance. Something on your end must have been screwed up. Could have been Steam trying to torrent an update while you are playing or something? Stange
@Riyku
Yes we saw you. You should have said something if you wanted to get noticed though.
@TF2 game
One more thing: Halfway through the game somebody (must have been an admin) renamed me to "red screen (of life)"…who did that? Was that you Tim?
@Discussion
I like to think that ponies are in both an advanced technological state AND a medieval state simultaneously thanks to their differing races
How that works is that Earth Ponies and Pegasi with their limited abilities to manipulate objects are restricted in their ability to handle technology and are stuck using raw materials, simple mechanisms etc and can only construct things of medieval design using medieval equipment.
Unicorns on the other hand, have access to technology far more advanced than what the other races have developed thanks to their magic. They can manipulate objects as good as any human, so their technology developed as fast as our did. This means that Unicorns already have technology such as Electrical appliances, magic-fueled heavy machinery, power tools and instruments
Unicorns are less in number however so when it comes to modernizing entire cities or their whole culture, they just don't have the horsepower to do it. Cities and communities are still built by the far more common Earth Ponies and Pegasi using their rudimentary ways. This gives you medieval looking castles and villages (made by ponies) that are outfitted with advanced looking modern hardware (supplies by unicorns)
Overall, the pony society is still within a medieval state, hence those castles armored guards, wooden carts and monarchies etc. It's just that those Unicorns are so good at manipulating objects that their inventions are centuries ahead of the game so this medieval society ended up with some modern tools (futuristic by their own perspective)
…or it's just because the writers just don't care about keeping a coherent timeline, that works too

You're lucky I wasn't on. I would've posted sad Luna way before you. I'm terrible.
Anyways, @dam
Those are the magic harvesting stations, silly! They just happened to be built next to a dam because… because.. water… harvests magic quicker!
@Ric:
Yeah, I noticed that, and I thought it was odd. Nobody else had immensely high Ping, so I'm not sure what the problem was.
@BSoD:
Yeah, it was one of the admins. They were probably just screwing with you, like it seems they're apt to. I actually kind of like that server, to be honest.
Anyways, I think what people have said regarding the technology seems pretty accurate. There's really not much to speculate on, since it seems to be the writer's whim, from what we've seen.
As for the scissors with finger holes…
@Blue Yoshi
So far, so good on Derpibooru.
Takes a little figuring out if you're used to Ponibooru, but once you get used to it and adjust the settings, it works really well!
Edit (surprisingly accurate!):
@BSoD
Ha!
I assumed you did that because you were on the red team a lot!
I doubt it was Tim, though.
That was just some random server that we mobbed into, so I don't think any of us had any power.

The only reason I was ahead was because I was the only one on the cart half the time (as well as being pyro with a mailbox).
You should see me as a spy on the second level of Dustbowl. Getting 12 kills a life consistently is fucking awesome.
Speaking of TF2, if anyone has a name tag I'll trade you nearly anything for it.
I put the finishing touches on that fic about Nightmare Moon. Link
I'll get to writing the second part eventually…
@Deadparrot
Oh right, I forgot we weren't on Tim's server. We went to a random one.
So yea, it must have been one of the local admins there. He just felt like renaming me. If I did it, I would have properly capitalized my name
It happened right after Randomman pointed out that that I was the Blue Screen, on Red Team. Apparently the admin decided to fix that
@Connor
Ah yes, I remember now. I even captured a few carts next to you.
You stole a lot of my kills with that mailbox

When we were playing TF2 it felt weird because i felt like i was the only one with a Mic. Other than that we need to play some more later. I could use a bit more training as the Demoman. My grenade and sticky skills are getting rusty. But i guess 62 points at the end of the match was good.
@Ric
I noticed you when you came onto the server. In fact i even called out for you when i saw you and i began bothering you afterwards. I was confused why you left after joining for about 5 minutes but i guess that makes sense.

Baby Dragon was served to me at Medieval Times. I couldn't help but think that they killed and cooked Spike.

You know what's really hilarious? I found that server a couple weeks ago, and I was rather impressed by their custom Canterlot map (which unfortunately we didn't use today). I was even chatting with an admin when Pyro and the others started joining. I was completely befuddled when I realized the server had been randomly stumbled upon by everyone from here like that. Very amusing indeed.
I think I'll avoid any more talk of that though, time for a random pony comic.

It's quite simple actually. You see, it's quite hard to operate scissors with only one hoof. The two holes are so you can place one hoof in each. Squish together and pull apart.
Not that I know from experience.

Actually, you can't place them on a technological "scale" BECAUSE NO SUCH SUCH SCALE EXISTS!
Technology isn't like what Sim Meier's Civilization or other games would have you believe, it is not a Tech Tree. Technology is invented when the needs arise for it to be invented and since most of the world is interconnected, technological ideas spread fast and most of the world is on the same level…but what if a part of the world was seperated from the rest….how would technology progress there?
LUCKILY, we have an example in the Aztecs:
When Cortez met the Aztecs it was a schizophrenic technological situation: The Aztecs knew advanced mathematical theory such as the concept of the Zero, but did not understand the wheel. They had architectural marvels that bested many European nations…but did not understand steel. And of course, they did not understand gunpowder….
So where does Equestria sit technologically?
My answer:

ITT: The point at which proper grammar ends and the hatred of religion begins.
Granted, that was probably a typo, but being religious (and very annoyed with all of the TF2 talk from before,) it stuck out to me.
Before I go to work, why do bronies (or many people within Web culture) dislike religion so much? One, the comparison of bronies from EqD who aren't affiliated with a religion with those in the US population who aren't affiliated with a religion. There is a huge difference with bronies having a majority (over 50% between Atheists and Agnostics) of those and Americans only having 7% of those not affiliated with a faith.
Two, anecdotally, I find people on the Internet to be much more strongly opposed to faith. I haven't run across many Atheists IRL who speak so poorly of religion. They simply don't believe religion offers what they need in terms of life meaning or philosophy.
Â
So why is that? I have my thoughts. Some may be a little insulting. But I can't remember if we've had that discussion with the current thread goers.
Cute Fluttershy. Just because.
@Verbose
Hey, you've returned to us at last. Granted, it was only a few days, but I still wondered.
By the way, I'm not surprised that you would say that about the TF2 chatter, I think it's obvious we overdid it a bit. If there's not already some kind of steam group or something where we can coordinate those sorts of things more freely, someone should probably get on that.
As for the question of beliefs, I'm still not convinced that the atheist brony count is really that high, but if it really is, that would certainly have to be because of what you said before about bronies largely coming from a population of preexisting habitual web users.
Now, if you're asking why many of those users are overtly against various forms of religion, you must realize you're opening up quite a Pandora's Box here. There are countless arguments and counter-arguments related to this subject, and online this topic always seems to involve a little (or a lot) of verbal mudslinging. I don't mean to imply that anyone here can't handle such a discussion maturely, but I do wonder if anything good can possibly come of it.
If you were to isolate the question of why some people online are so outspoken with their anti-religious sentiment, that is obviously a simple matter of internet anonymity. But the reasons behind their underlying animosity are varied, not to mention highly volatile.
This is something I'd definitely approach with caution myself, but I must confess I am curious what your thoughts are on the matter.
One thing's for sure: if we do establish that the brony view on the subject is merely a byproduct of their web-culture mindset, then in order to explore the topic any further, we'll essentially have to delve into discussing the entire population of web lurkers; to say that's a complex undertaking would be a massive understatement. Anyone who tries to explain such a population in a few short paragraphs risks being guilty of gross over-simplification, don't you think?
@Verbose
I have a very simple conclusion on all of that. Let it be fandoms, communities, sites, religion, movements, anything. I don't hate Jesus, just some of his fans. Same as I don't hate 9gag, just some of its members. I think this applies to most people here. I'm not always as proud on bronies either, as they often tend to overreact to stuff. But bronies aren't unique in this, the Homestuck fandom often has this as well. But it's not a reason for me to hate the entire fandom, just those few that jump out and get butthurt over every small thing.
@Verbose
Perhaps some have simply found a new god!
In reality, the anti-religious stuff you see is likely just a combination of youth and anonymity.
People tend to get more religious as they get older (not to mention the growing number of atheists/agnostics in society anyway) so the fact that we are mostly in our teens and twenties makes religious animosity more likely.
That, coupled with an anonymous platform to speak from with few, if any, repercussions, will always lead to a general amplifying and polarization of opinions.
I don't think we should get too far into the debate of why all this happens because this isn't really the place for it, but those are the basics as I see them.
@Phoneix
Good point. Although I think my theory on the subject was more creative, yours is very logical.
There's no rule anywhere that technology of separate fields must advance in parallel with technology in other fields.
It could well be that Ponies have a use for hydro-electric dams but not for the purpose of powering homes. It could also be that while they understand construction with heavy machinery, they don't yet understand city architecture.
They also discovered flash photography because not everyone can just use magic for their still portraits but at the same time they have not invented private cars because they are horses, they ARE their own vehicle.
They have a purposes for some inventions but not others and that may be the root cause of why their technology seems so inconsistent compared to our own. It makes sense
@Verbose
Were bringing religion into this now? We must be bored or something.
Doesn’t capitalize “god” at the beginning of the sentence.
Just to offer a differing perspective here. I see 'God' and 'god' as separate things. One is a deity, the other is just an expletive. I like to think God either understands or doesn't really care about that
Before I go to work, why do bronies (or many people within Web culture) dislike religion so much?
I'm sure you know the answer. The lack of faith in the fandom is not a Brony related trait anywhere in the slightest. It's simply a result of the fandom being internet based.
The internet in general is dominated by Athiest culture. Any fandoms that spawn from it inherit that godlessness by default simply because of the probability involved.
-Religiously devout are less likely to be regular internet users. Reasons why vary from person to person and I wont go into detail.
-Thus internet users randomly found on the internet are likelier to be an Athiest
-Internet users are also likelier to become Bronies
-Thus bronies are likelier to be Athiests. Simple logic
Also I really don't trust statistics on the number of those who claim to be religious that come from IRL surveys and censuses. I find that people IRL are more likely to lie about being religious just to get in on whatever good image it may give them. But they are more open about thier true thoughts on the matter on the internet so the internet sounds more vocally Athiest compared to IRL examples.
I've even caught myself doing that. To be honest to you guys I would consider myself an pseudo-christian agnostic theist (or just plain agnostic with Christian influences) but to people in real life I've often called myself a non-denominational Christian. Why do I do this?
But I can’t remember if we’ve had that discussion with the current thread goers.
We might have talked about this before actually in a previous PG thread. Maybe.
@Verbose
IRL I am a Christian (more specifically, a Roman Catholic). Which is why I have such a moral standpoint on certain things, was reluctant on that sexuality thing a while back, and try to censor myself as best I can if I'm either angry or jokingly. Though meme pics and reaction vids may have swearing, you'd be surprised how little I do those things irl.
Why I don't bring it up much is because of the amount of atheists on the internet, especially ones who are really hateful of religion. It's sad that it gets to the point of not bothering anymore, but it does.
I think if there's a problem with anti-religion sentiment in a community like ours, it's more related to modern culture. Ever since the Enlightenment there have been chalenges to Christian (more specifically Catholic) ideas and alternatives to the concept of God than before, due to scientific discoveries. Though none could fully discredit the existence of God, it managed to convince a lot of people to give up on religion. Soon, many vices that were strictly prohibited under a Catholic/Christian Europe slowly started to come up as tolerable, due to simple moral rebellion by the people. Especially within the last twenty or so years with the concept of YOLO (in all reality, a very un-religious ethic) and the thought of living life without consequence, the latter being an important factor, as people today want to do what they want without being told otherwise. Sex, drugs, and alcohol are more abused than ever.
