A weapon that would be completely impractical in real life but is totally badass in like video games, or anime, or cartoons

For me its scythes

Lightsabers or any type of energy swords. You'd either go blind, kill yourself, or maim yourself with this sort of thing. But goddamn if it isn't cool.

With intrest of not bogging down the thread with a wall of images, I'll only demonstrate my absolute favorite. Also no Mecha since that's a Vehicle and not a Weapon. Here we go.

Fantasy Film: Sting Having a dagger that gives away the location of your enemies is probably one of the best tools you have. You can tell when you have become safe or not as well.
Fantasy Game: The Master Sword I seem to have a thing for Lasers, so when one of my favorite swords of all time can shoot them with semi-regularity, hands down no contest here. It's not even the coolest or most powerful video game sword I have used, but the weight of it's legacy makes it for me.
Scifi Film: The Lightsaber. Was tied between the Star Trek Disintegration Phaser, the Dalek's instant kill Laser, and the Lightsaber. But really, what's the diffrence between the 3? The Lightsaber trumps the other two in Defense and has far more uses. So the Lightsabers win.
Scifi Game: Chozo Arm Cannon. With Samus's Suit being like a Swiss Army Knife, this is no exception. So much firepower it's amazing.
Anime: Lord Melt's Golf Club of Lighting Magic Set I wouldn't have picked a magic catalyst unless if it was a specific spell tied to a weapon, but fortunately this meets the requirement. This is the best magic weapon ever, period. And worthy of the egotistical noble dunce who wields them.

Grand Prize: The Point of View Gun

No, Contest.

Hands down it has to be Landships, especially since they were so close to being a real thing…a really inefficient and stupid thing but still.

The HL2 AR2.

When you're not pelting the baddies with it's high RoF, it can shoot energy balls that disintegrate people. And that's awesome.

When in doubt, Megatron's Fusion Cannon

or better yet, Tarn's double barrel Fusion Cannon

another possible favorite might be IDW Megatron's Rail Gun

The Monado. The eponymous Xenoblade itself. I can't really talk about why, because spoilers … but there's a reason for the "Xeno" and that it takes its name from "Monad".

Also it does not just laser. It can EXPAND laser.

undoubtedly the most powerful Blade in Diablo right now because its raw damage is unsurpassed.
if you thought saurons mace was bad Morgoths is insane, capable of creating entire craters and causing lightning strikes as it strikes the ground.

Too many to choose from! And the bad part is what is fictional now could probably be developed given time. #ScientificScienceFiction #ftw

My overall answer would depend on what I needed a weapon for too. Long Range? Short Range? Stealth? Fire Power?

Something that works in anime for all of the above, and a method that I really favor are energy attacks that flow from the body.

I was a decent fan of DBZ for a while, but I really took a liking to Yu Yu Hakusho around the same time too.

I just really loved the concept, but I guess that also was why I liked minority report and any kind of physical manipulation / levitation using the hands.

But if I had to choose, of course I would choose some type of energy sword.

Depending on the design, you can get a good compromise between a body energy power and a katana.

Second choice would be a M27 from CoD:BOII.

The gun is pretty good and the attachments make the gun. Whether it be a good Millimeter Scanner to see through walls, or a Target Finder to identify hostiles, it's super effective at long and short range.

Except for the ability to alter odds and probability. Like that is the power that could change the very fabric of the universe. What's the probability that gravity exists? Just turn that down to a nice clean zero and watch the chaos.

Now these are missles with that ability.

But you know what else these missles can do? They can fucking go through time and space to hit their target.

As if Gurren Lagann wasn't op enough as it is. Spiral Power is something else.
