sorry fam, but any reasonable folk, as in the majority of the people here, will use the downvote as less of a 'fuck you' button and more of a 'i don't like this thing in particular' button like it was intended. a few sour and petty apples shouldn't be cited as grounds for the removal of a button that works as intended in any other circumstance.

If you're gonna remove downvotes, may as well remove the voting system entirely. You can't just have this positive hugbox mentality with your comments. Expressing an opinion, joke or shitpost that will bother people is up to your discretion. Getting your comment buried rarely means shit on this website. You could bring up Bill-That-Looks-Like-a-Stan or whatever his name is, but he knew the risk of how rabid the fanbase he was attacking can be.

The problem is that the admins see it as a free speech issue and that removing the downvote button would equate to censorship

Also apparently downvote bots are dealt with quickly, and if you get downvotes on every comment it's more because one user has a chip on his shoulder and is dealing with it by downvoting everything you post

If you're one of those folks that isn't going to read 4 years of eldritch lore, this thread basically boils down to:

• Being a previous site admin doesn't really give an argument any traction here. At this point most of the mods have histories of managing other sites; what is effective in another community may not always be effective here.
• This has been discussed to the ends of the fucking earth and the general consensus is "it doesn't matter".
• Any other argument that can be made has already been made in, like, at least 3 other threads.

You're welcome to add another layer of abstraction to this non-issue by making functionally identical posts to the ones I've (recursively) linked to above. The mod team can't/won't (we haven't decided which yet) stop you.

If there's a problem with bots you don't need to go announcing it in the forums. No one gives a shit. You go to a user mod, people who have to give a shit. I know. I have encountered downvote bots before.
