It's been a while since our last "viral fandom"

It feels like just a couple years ago, we kept seeing new fandoms popping up left and right. We saw stuff like My Little Pony, Five Nights at Freddy's, Undertale, DDLC, etc. get uber popular in ways that were at the time unprecedented. Then, all of a sudden, it just… stopped. We haven't gotten any big, viral, fandoms in quite some time, possibly since DDLC.

Do you think we're due for another fandom boom? Or would you be better off with not seeing one for a long time?

There is a fandom boom going on atm actually, but it's for the show Chernobyl which doesn't have much of an overlap with he audience of this site, hence the lack of a presence here

Also generally speaking, IPs going viral like those you listed is not an easy thing to accomplish, it usually takes a special type of thing to release at the right time for that storm to take place.

I edited my comment before seeing your response, which makes it weird, but yeah it is kinda strange seeing that gap on this site, but the culture of the internet means it isn't really something that died, so much as it is sleeping

I don't think there will be something that will plague the internet exceptionally well as MLP has.

Doesn't mean that obnoxious fandoms aren't still growing, like Minecraft and Smash Bros.

What do you think the Tik-Tok abomination is? It just absorbed all the idiots that make up the cringy side of every fandom and fused them into an unholy amalgamation of idiots.

On the bright side, we get less idiots in our fandoms.

On the downside, we get Tik-Tok.

Your sense of time seems out of whack (the last several years have bled together for me too). You say "a couple years ago" and "left and right", but each of those things debuted in a different year between 2010 and 2017. In fact, the distance between Undertale and DDLC is 2 years, the same distance between DDLC and now.

Oh, you're right. Guess it must've felt like that back then.

I think there's a boom with Fire Emblem three houses, I'm seeing memes and fanart for it way after release date. Might be the next big thing

What sets FE apart from Viral fandoms is that FE has been going on as a franchise for many years. This isn't the first time the franchise has seen much internet love (Awakening comes to mind, specifically), and it certainly won't be the last.

Whereas most viral fandoms pop up out of nowhere, surpass their contemporaries, and then fade away from public eye after a while. Can you name anyone who still talks about Five Nights at Freddy's?
