Does anyone know what they refer to? And has anyone else seen any examples of these?
It seems to be connectd to phones, perhaps the japanese greeting for telephone calls?

Moshi Moshi is "hello" for Japanese, on the Telephone.
It's always been a popular image macro, and an easy way to start a thread on anime forums, with more pictures of people on telephones.
The Jesus picture has always been the most well-known, although there are a couple other popular ones.
As to when it started to become popular, I don't know :/
I think its just always been recognized as hilarious.
moshi moshi?
Big thanks Ogreenworld! Do you think it's worth an entry then? I'll write one up in a bit if so.
Maybe worth an entry, although you'd have to note its not just limited to images, and its usage varies a lot.
It was less-so a fad, and moreso something that is well-known across a lot of forums and pops up every now and then.
Kind of like "sugoi" and "kawaii," less of a fad, and more of a well known Japanese word.
