About

Republicans Are Weird refers to unofficial messaging adopted by the Democratic Party's 2024 Presidential Election campaign that sought to deride Republican policies in general, and J.D. Vance, in particular, as "weird" as opposed to only "scary" or "dangerous." Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made an appearance on MSNBC where he described key Republican policies, as well as Trump's seeming fixation on Hannibal Lecter in his campaign speeches, as "weird" in July 2024. This sentiment about Trump was also echoed in a press release from Kamala Harris's presidential campaign that described Donald Trump as "old and weird." In late July 2024, businessman and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy notably criticized Democrats for adopting "weird" as a messaging tactic, calling it "dumb & juvenile."

Background

One of the earliest mentions of Democrats using the word "weird" to disparage their Republican opponents is a quote from Kamala Harris reported by CNN[1] on July 5th, 2024. When asked what she would do if Donald Trump followed her around on the debate stage as he did to Hillary Clinton in 2016, Harris reportedly said that she would turn around and ask Trump, "Why are you being so weird?"

X[2] user @JohnDiLillo posted the excerpt to his Twitter / X account on July 5th, 2024, gathering over 40,000 likes in a month (seen below).

John DiLillo @JohnDiLillo I genuinely think this is a winning message lol CNN Politics Live TV Harris has considered what it would be like to run against Trump before. In late 2018, over two days of sessions with top aides to decide about running for the Democratic nomination in 2020, among the questions aides pressed her with was what she would do in a town hall-style debate with Trump, similar to the one in 2016 where the Republican infamously stalked around behind Hillary Clinton at times. Harris' answer: She'd turn around and say to him, "Why are you being so weird?" 12:46 PM ⚫ Jul 5, 2024 3.8M Views

A clip from the appearance was posted to Tim Walz's Twitter[3] page on July 23rd, 2024, where it gathered over 43,000 likes in a week (seen below).

This really is a very effective line of attack. Hardline conservative sentiment has always been that they are the "silent majority", that everyone secretly agrees with them, that their world view is the natural order and that disagreement is abnormal and bad. The idea that no, they are in fact the weird ones really pisses off a lot of them.

Look at trump, he talks like a total insane person going off on rants about hannibal lector and wind turbines and boat motors and Low IQ DEI Kamala, etc etc, and to anyone not plugged directly into the right wing ecosystem eventually hits a breaking point with that.

The fact that a lot of extreme conservatives first response to the concept of trans people is to call them pedophiles and bring up the completely imaginary concept of child genital mutilation when the most that happens in real life is puberty blockers, or the people who insist that school shootings are all staged. The republican party has just been inundated with weird freaks

So much of politics is the battle to control the narrative. For decades a core part of Republican narratives has been that they represent normal/average/"real" Americans against abnormal/degenerate/outside forces. Just when they most struggle to hold onto that narrative this thing takes a swing at it.
It's a little thing, but if this counter-narrative takes off it could have real rhetorical potential.
