Can we get the actual spam posts deleted too? Because I've been coming across a few lists of links by spammers whose accounts have since been banned, but their lists of advertised crap are still up (which look unsightly and is what they want).

The latest such list I've come across recently is by hopf9dsa0 in comments at manly-tears
I didn't save others I've recently come across, but while trying to find them I instead came across the following…

These last huge lists were almost entirely out of the Google search for "site:knowyourmeme.com handbags". Searching other things spammers like to spam, like "products," brings up a lot of stuff, though adding "profile" will only pretty much bring up spam accounts similar to those in the last list.
I'm stopping here for now.

I would delete those comments too, but I only have power to remove forum posts.

What we really need is a better bot filtering system since image captcha's aren't enough. Spammers have long since found a way around them.

We often don't spot the spam accounts until they post somewhere. Ones that post in the forum get spotted immediately and their accounts deleted but ones that make an obscure comment somewhere go unnoticed

The reason those aren't gone is due to changes in the way we process bans. I'll try to get them all now.

I've taken care of those. We're actually currently under a spam attack for the past two days, but the bots aren't doing anything. A lot of them seem to have been deactivated, so maybe James has something set up for that. But holy fuck there are a lot of them.

And I sincerely apologize to all the mods who just received about 100 emails in 15 minutes. My advice is to filter those straight to the trash.

Following up to this: In the past banning spambots would keep the media they uploaded and replaced their comments by deactivation messages. But as stated, bans have been upgraded, and they now take care of everything (except deleting complete threads, dunno why).

The spambots that were found by Cartoonmaster were old spambots who didn't had theirs redone.

Alright, that makes sense. I kind of wondered to myself, "Don't we have a more thorough system..?" since I've seen plenty of deactivation messages across the site for deactivated users. I thought maybe it was a difference between how voluntarily deactivated users vs. banned users are handled or how bans were handled over time. It makes sense that those spam lists are old, in that case.

And taking a break again.

Jostin, you don't have the ability to delete spam accounts? I can't ban/delete your account which suggests that you should have the same level of mod powers as me (two areas among media, forums, and entries in addition to banning.)

Nope, I'm pretty sure I can't delete accounts.

I'm guessing that the reason for this is either because I'm one of the older mods and the ability was only given to the newer mods or because I was inactive at the time the feature was implemented, meaning that giving me the ability would have been pointless.

Edit: Hey, should we talk to staff and see if you can get endowed with that set of powers? If you don't want them, then I think we have the capacity to function as is, but it was frustrating for me to see spammers and not be able to fully deal with them.

It doesn't really bother me as much to not have them. However, I have noticed, over the short period of time that I've been back, that spambots are more frequent on the forums now. Perhaps if I did have them, things would run a bit smoother around here.

It depends on the powers that be. If they think that giving me some banning powers would benefit the site, then I'll be glad to uphold the responsibility.
