Idea for KYM to make more money: Something like Reddit Gold

I got this idea from a post where someone mentioned "an economy of kicks" and it got me thinking: Reddit makes money off the reddit gold economy, why not have the same thing, but for KnowYourMeme? The site would make money off it AND people would be able to gain more prestige for good posts on the front page or forums. Both the site and the community would be happy with this. Personally I recommend we call it Troll's Gold, it'd be like Fool's Gold, but Troll's.

The quoted post has been deleted.

I'm sorry are you posting your ideas daily only for them to be mocked by the entire community? Didn't think so. GTFO, and if anyone else has an actual opinion please post it.

*Ahem*

Not everyone. Sheesh.

@OP

Throwing in my opinion here: I really don't like the general concept of premium membership, especially for a site like KYM. IMO, KYM is meant to be accessible to everyone. The current "restricted" features (upvoting, downvoting, favoriting, posting etc.) are accessible only to those who have an account (which can be made free of charge).

Adding features that you can only access if you pay seems a bit against for what KYM is going for. If any new features are going to be added, it should be for everyone, and at the very least, only for KYM users.

Buut, that's just my opinion.

@Inferno,

Please provide constructive criticism instead of just bashing OP

No, stop it.

We have no interest in making money from the user base. We don't work like that. All your ideas were rejected so far and yet, you refuse to listen. Get a grip dude.

GTFO, and if anyone else has an actual opinion please post it.

Please don't insult other users. Keep it civil, we're not here to comply for your personal wishes.

Edit:

@josie

Good for you man. It seems you can't follow the rules either since you choose to post it here rather than take it on my wall. Keep the personal discussion outside of this thread. Thanks.

Loli you consistently seem to have a way of bashing any post I make. I told them to leave because they were saying something along the lines of "you're still trying? haha, no". Stop playing things one-sidedly and always criticizing me for defending myself. I'm not trying to get everyone to comply they can say it's bad, but I want reasons beyond "too much for the coder" and "we don't want it". And yeah, I refuse to listen. I have every, right to keep trying to make an idea. There is nothing wrong with that and if there is then don't have a section for posting ideas in the first place.

Stop derailing the thread.

Take a step back and see what just happened. And think about why you didn't stop Loli. Wyn can't defend himself, but Loli can step in, say very little about why the idea is bad, and not have a word said to him.

Since no one else will, I will. And then I'll criticize the idea to stay on topic.

No, stop it.

  • This is a Suggest Ideas board. If an idea is bad, then give reasons for it, and let the thread die. If it's a redundant idea, then direct to the original thread and lock the redundant one. But there's no reason to just say "Stop it" short of spamming.
  • To be honest, Loli hasn't been around long enough to make that call on what KYM wants, and he certainly hasn't been in regular enough contact with the admins and Cheezburger to know that one way or another. He shouldn't be speaking so confidently if he's speaking for so many people. The admins just don't care that much about the forums, because that's not where the views (and therefore, money,) is made. KYM historically hasn't pulled money directly from the userbase as of yet, and I think such an approach will cause some ill-will, because monetizing stuff on a previously "Free" site probably won't be taken well. But let's not think that the admins don't mostly ignore just about everything that happens in the forums short of all of the mods and some of the users PMing them frequently about some issue. The admins here are as light-handed as they come. They've got other things to see to. So don't assume that they wouldn't consider the idea if there was a way to pull it off or if Cheezburger wanted more money from the site.
    • As an example, forum moderators, even basic ones have always had the ability to clean out the forums. User post, entire thread, multiple threads, no time limit…any one rogue forum moderator can clean out the forum overnight.
    • But it was just a recent matter of even being able to delete just one comment on the entries. That's because the forums can more or less go away and it not affect anything regarding the success of the site. But one instance of "censoring" in the entries is seen by dozens, if not hundreds or thousands on a trending entry. Remember that.
  • And so what if he's had bad ideas? Just take the idea, say why it wouldn't work, and let the thread die. There's no point in stopping a person from trying to improve the site short of them spamming threads, and it doesn't look like Wyn's threads are making it hard to find other threads (especially in a dead forum like this one.)
  • And finally, if not most importantly, don't be an ass. At least he's trying to improve the site instead of putting users down, something that loli has consistently done for a while now. Considering the title of just being a forum moderator (and the lack of importance the forum has to KYM on the whole), that means…he's probably done little of import. So what good does that do except make him feel bad? You get a grip. You're not that important. I'm well-aware: any one forum mod can leave, and the forum doesn't miss a beat.

Besides,

Please don’t insult other users.

You insult users all of the time. Granted, that doesn't mean Wyn should too, but…would you really want to run a straw poll on how nice you are to users compared to other moderators? You're not one to speak.

Now for the idea itself:

Like I said, I don't think you can take a database of memes, probably one of the premiere places to find organized information on memes (something that are nearly inherently free given the nature of the Internet), and add any overt monetizing feature to it without backlash.

Now if there's a way to make it work and make it acceptable, then perhaps you could make money off of it. I honestly don't see that happening, but I can't say I'm for it, so I'm not really thinking about ways it could work either.

As for the forums, it's extremely small compared to the eyes viewing the entries and galleries. KYM has over 500,000 Facebook Likes, and that doesn't even consider the people who randomly want to find out more about Shia LaBeouf's "Do it" videos, Google it, and find KYM's entry as the first result. The forums have never been that active, so if there is something to make notable money then it should probably focus more on the entries, comments sections, and galleries.

reddit gold works out of blocking features for users and unblocking them with said gold.

there is really not much that can be blocked from the already existing average user that wouldnt cause a backlash, i find it rather hypocritical you mentioned in the other thread "its all about the user"; well wouldnt it be stupid to block features from users just because they arent willing to pay for them? kym has pretty much went as a free site for everyone that lives off ad revenue, changes like that only can stirr up problem.

besidies what can you block? ability to make entries? ability to upvote downvote posts? ability to upload? iunno seems like there aint much to start with.

also the admins dont really like giving prestige to users for such mundane stuff such a frontpage or a high comment, frontpage is about the content, not the user who found it and uploaded it and then should receive praise

Okay, I am understanding the feedback so far. The idea of KYM having some sort of economy seems to cause an issue in that people feel it'd have to be based on blocking features. I honestly did not know that's how reddit gold works and feel rather ignorant for not having known. Honestly, I was under the impression Reddit Gold was a completely useless feature and was just a marker of prestige you could buy for other people. I suppose what I actually meant when I suggested this is that you could buy Troll's Gold, and this gold would be absolutely worthless beyond displaying a user's prestige, showing how much they have been given by other users and whenever it is given it would mark a post as being particularly good. I know to some that sounds rather pointless, but if it can make the site some money while also serving as a nice novelty feature, I figure it would be a win-win. Sorry for confusion I was not in full understanding of how Reddit operated their currency.

That makes more sense, Epyc. How about extending the favorite button to comments/forum posts instead of reserving it just for images, videos, and entries? It would allow people to return to comments that they found particularly funny.

We sold merchandise sometime in the past, but that's already not happening anymore for a long time.

Unfortunate tbh, because if we started selling KYM labcoats we could probs get some profit out of it as that used to be quite a demanded item to be added to the store.

If you're going to advice people to not be an ass, then don't be an ass in that exact same paragraph, please. Makes you a bit of a hypocrite, no?

Yeah I'm just gonna jump over that post from Rando entirely. Particle Mare, that should actually become a thread. If you don't make it I will in a bit. Thank you for the input that is a good idea. :)

i agree some kind of optional merchandise or well other types of optional gains could benefit the site well, mostly because it doesnt interrupt the average user who is not interested when browsing the site.
