About

Danny Butterman's "Shame" is a quote by Hot Fuzz protagonist Danny Butterman (played by Nick Frost) said while reloading a pump-action shotgun. The scene became a popular reaction image online, paired with captions where one might sarcastically express pity. It also inspired redraws.

Origin

The action comedy movie Hot Fuzz premiered on February 26th, 2007. In the middle of the supermarket assault scene, Nicholas Angel joins Butterman's position and assesses the situation with him. This scene (see below) was first uploaded on YouTube on March 16th, 2008[1].

The beginning of their conversation is as follows:

- How's Lurch?
- He's in the freezer.
- Did you say "Cool off"?
- No, I didn't say anything actually.
- Shame.

Spread

Butterman's disappointed reaction was singled out and used as a reaction image (see examples below) that was posted in contexts of conflict and violence. While it's unclear when it was first used as a meme, it was especially popular on Reddit. On November 27th, 2018, a meme using this reaction image was posted on r/memes[2], where it gained over 9,800 points in 6 years.
