I think there is something to definitely settle in that topic.
Because I find it to reek of sneaky wills and traps.
Basically, most of people in this topic are new to the site, are from ED from one way or the other, and level up their karma together, and this altogether is filling me with the utmost caution.
Why ? Because it seems so out of place.
Is this a more different type of raid to this website ?
I don't know and I don't really care, in the end, but I will expose my view as a recent Mod and a KYM user:
WE ARE NOT ENCYCLOPEDIA DRAMATICA !
So many people seem to love bashing KYM because of it. Since ED brought up its SFW version "whatport80"… and even prior to this, there have been many haters who don't want to get it (for the lulz or seriously)
The first goal of this website is to provide a more "neutral" and unbiased analyze of Internet memes. That doesn't mean in any way that there is no humor present in the entries because it's tolerated as long as it doesn't get in the way of the information. The same way, since the beginning, those who follow KYM episodes can see that there are references and jokes in it.
But why include satire where ED and other website are doing it so much better than KYM ?
- This website doesn't want to steal ED's job in satirizing the web.
- Memes aren't made of jokes and satires only. The best example for this would be the wikis entry. Of course there are parodies of wikis (ED being one of them) but it is more a matter of practicality, more than jokes.
Contrary to what the ED's article has to say about KYM: "Analyzing humor is a pastime of humorless people", we don't analyze humor, we point at the impact on the Internet, the sociology behind the mutations, parodies and evolution.
Explaining why a particular video or image provide appeal and how it evolves doesn't ruin the joy in using it and, I'm repeating myself, it doesn't prevent people from lurking moar.
That being said, we have enough haters who believe that KYM makes money out of memes (only because they dare to sell T-shirt the same way ED does) or are willing to copyright memes (something that is really silly. We can't copyright memes and never will), I personnally don't want to add more haters about "LOLOLO U R LIEK ED U DIPSHIT" for that matter.
- Now, concernings articles that may have wrong info, we are constantly revising previous entries to fix them.
For instance, the "Ran Ran Ru" entry has been set back to submission to separate the "U.N Owen Was Her?" meme that has been mixed with it.
But this job is hard, as shown by The early confirmed meme expansion project. You have to understand that it's not something that can be done quickly. Besides, when KYM started, admins had a different view about confirming memes and were… quick to confirm something even without some vital information on it.
On the other hand, the recent editorship installment has been created to help decreasing a little our work and filling up the entries for anybody that can have some information to add.
There, I hope I have mentionned everything that needed to be on that particular subject.
