Nintendo already shut down the shops for both platforms earlier this year but surprisingly did keep online play for games like Mario Kart 7 and 8 and Splatoon going, but now it's confirmed that next April Nintendo will shut down the servers for these platforms for good. Guess if you're among the small groups of people still regularly playing games like Splatoon 1 then you better play as much as you can before the servers are shut down.

A damn shame. at least it has a long run, especially for WiiU given how many games from there was being ported to Switch.
Although, knowing the Nintendo modding community, there's might be a possibility of being able to reconnect those consoles again for online in the unforeseen future. They had done it with DS and Wii, both of which are fairly simple to setup.

Seeing how the switch already has a few private servers running for some games, I don't doubt the Wii U will have some as well.
