About
Hawkeye is a 2021 Disney+ online series that stars the titular character in a post Endgame world of The Avengers, sharing continuity with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show is, to date, the furthest point explored within the show, taking place one year after the events of the Endgame and showing a New York that has relatively gotten back to normal.
History
As part of Marvel's "Phase Four," which includes all films and series set after Endgame, the Hawkeye series was officially announced on July 21st, 2019, at San Diego Comic-Con. Footage of the announcement was uploaded to YouTube[1] by the channel FilmsThatRock on July 21st, 2019, gaining over 190,000 views in two years (shown below).
It wasn't until September 13th, 2021, that the official trailer for the series would be posted online, done so by the official Marvel Entertainment YouTube[2] channel. The trailer, which gave a more in-depth look at the action scenes and showcased the new character Kate Bishop, who in the comics becomes the second Hawkeye, was viewed over 21 million times in three months (shown below).
Online Presence
As soon as the trailer dropped on September 13th, 2021, there was buzz surrounding the project, as well as memes being made using various parts of it. That same day, Twitter[3] account @kxtebish0p posted a series of four images, with three of them being Marvel characters who do a particular landing pose after jumping, and the fourth being of Kate Bishop on a car after not landing properly, earning 1,400 likes in three months (shown below).
When the series first came out, much like what happened with The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, memes were made of different scenes within each episode.
These memes were then posted to a subreddit devoted to the show, among other platforms or communities, in this case being /r/Hawkeye.[4] From episode one, the main meme from the debut was of writing on a urinal. In the scene, Clint Barton goes to the bathroom and sees someone who wrote "Thanos Was Right" on the urinal, visibly upsetting Clint. In the memes referencing this, the words are changed for something else, with the same reaction face shown for humor. An example with notably high engagement was uploaded on November 24th, 2021, by Redditor[5] KhrysesAD, where it gained over 300 upvotes in two weeks (shown below).
