Overview
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a Disney+ series continuing the MCU storyline from where it left off in Avengers Endgame. While other movies and series, such as Wandavision have come out to continue the plot, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier continued the Captain America storyline, one that fans claimed is one of the main storylines within the shared universe.
History
The first short teaser for the show was shown at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the year that Endgame came out. Originally slated to be the first Disney+ marvel program to release, its August 2020 release date was pushed back due to COVID-19, so Wandavision was able to be released first, with Falcon and Winter Solder releasing shortly after it. The official trailer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was released on February 7th, 2021, by Marvel Entertainment's YouTube account[1], receiving 15.3 million views and 632,000 likes in two months.
The first episode premiered on March 19th, 2021, on the Disney+ streaming platform. The plot of the episode revolved around the aftermath of the previous movie's exploits, as well as exploring previously established characters Falcon and Bucky in a new way. There are six episodes in total, each coming out a week after the previous one, with the last episode expected to end the series on April 23rd, 2021. Because this series was meant to fill in a gap between the mainline movies, there is no plan to continue on with a second season.
Online Presence
According to Disney, the first episode of the series was the most-watched opening episode of any series to date. By releasing each episode one week at a time, the internet has been able to comb over each one and pick out different things to become memes, which has led to numerous show elements being turned into memes, as was done previously with Wandavision. This primarily has taken place on the subreddit /r/marvelmemes[2], where new formats take shape after each episode airs. While most memes are direct images or gifs from the show, some memes do not reference the source material of the show itself, but rather focus on other parts of it. This can be seen with the meme posted by Redditor[3] RossSkyWalkerr to the /r/MarvelMemes subreddit on April 5th, 2021, which gained 182 upvotes in 13 days (shown below).
