Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling is an indie turn-based combat video game developed by Moonsprout and published by DANGEN. The game focuses on a team of Kabbu, Vi, and Leif who go through adventures to get the Queen the Everlasting Sapling that grants unending youth and strength to whoever ate its leaves. The game took four years to develop and was titled Paper Bugs until the final name was announced in January 2018. It has since been favorably compared to Paper Mario.

History

Jose Fernando Gracia and Marcio Cleiton started development on Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling in 2015. Early in the development, they made an IndieGoGo^[1] campaign with the goal of $20,000. By the end of the campaign, the project had raised $24,690, 123% of its goal, with a total of 627 backers, allowing the game to successfully continue development. The first trailer for the game was released on May 28th, 2020. The game was released for Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Reception

Critics praised the game, particularly its level design and combat, the flat, paper-like art style and the soundtrack. The main criticism revolved around difficulty controlling Vi’s Boomerang in the overworld to solve puzzles. The PC release received a score of 86/100 on the reviews aggregation website Metacritic^[2] and the Switch release a score of 85/100. Nintendo Life gave it 8/10 stars, while Nintendo World Report gave it a 9.5/10, RPGamer rated the game 4/5 and TouchArcade gave it a 4.5/5 score.
