Gloria Maria is a Brazilian journalist who rose to internet prominence through the TV program "Globo Repórter" she hosted on the Globo channel. Moments like Maria smoking Jamaican weed and diving into a pool in Norway were turned into image macros, GIFs, reaction images and many other types of memes, particularly in Brazil.

Career

Gloria Maria was a Brazilian journalist, reporter and television host. Her career started in the '60s, and she is considered the first television reporter and TV host of African descent to achieve national success in Brazil.^[1] Gloria passed away on February 2nd, 2023 due to metastatic brain cancer.

Online History

Some of the more notable stories she told on the TV program "Globo Repórter"^[2] ended up generating historic images and many memes on social media.

One of the main forms of memes being generated about the Brazilian journalist comes in the form of GIF captions with original texts depending on the origin clip of Gloria Maria. In the video below, posted by a Twitter^[6] fan page of the journalist, @GifsGloriaMaria, a scene from a TV story is turned into a GIF caption about entering "someone's heart and finding nothing." Posted on August 15th, 2017, the GIF received 697 likes and 526 retweets (seen below).

Another classic GIF that gained virality on social media is a moment in which the journalist goes inside a camouflaged hole in the ground. Twitter^[7] user @DivaDepressao used the GIF to talk about concerns over the Brazilian government on April 6th, 2020, receiving 5,100 likes and 1,249 retweets in three years (seen below).

Gloria Maria Smoking Jamaican Weed

Airing on TV Globo on July 1st, 2016, the Brazilian journalist told a story about her visit to Jamaica. During her trip, Gloria appears smoking weed from the country and is later filmed in several scenes completely "out of her mind," including a scene in which she rides a roller coaster. The moment went viral on social media as people commented on the journalist's facial expressions and funny reactions. The YouTube^[3] page @PortalReggaedoVale posted the scene on July 2nd, 2016, which received 607,219 views in six years.

The scenes also were turned into image macro memes, as users began to add captions to the images, like the one below (left), which translates to "when I watch a horror movie and hear a noise in my room." The smoking clip also inspired another meme (below, right) that says in Portuguese, "when I see my grades at school." The images were uploaded by the meme website Museu dos Memes^[8] in June 2016.

Gloria Maria Diving In Frozen River

On June 20th, 2019, Gloria Maria dove into an icy fjord in winter in Norway. The scenes were turned into GIFs, image macros and other meme formats on social media. Twitter^[4] user @tomsoares shared the journalist's diving clip on June 21st, 2019, which received 112,100 views and 279 likes in four years (seen below).

Gloria Maria At Zero Gravity

In 2007, Gloria was the first Brazilian journalist to participate in a NASA zero gravity test. The Twitter^[5] page @choquei shared the clip of Gloria's experience in zero gravity on February 2nd, 2023, garnering 683,700 views and 53,900 likes in one day (seen below).
