About
#5YearOldSelfie is a hashtag used to catalog messages by Twitter users who post selfies of themselves as 5-year-olds and messages to their childhood selves. The campaign, which was started by Young Minds, is in support of mental health awareness and self-care.
Origin
On August 8th, 2019, the Young Minds Twitter[1] posted a new campaign about self-esteem and self-care. They wrote, "Next time you feel down about yourself, remember your message to your #5YearOldSelfie." The post received more than 189,000 views, 3,000 likes and 1,100 retweets in 24 hours (shown below).

That day, YouTuber Dan Howell tweeted[2], "i literally peaked age five ∙ cute, poised, sassy ∙ infectious happiness ∙ big imagination and an open heart." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 112,000 likes and 10,000 retweets (shown below, left).
Throughout the day, people continued to share letters to their 5-year-old self. Twitter[3] user @BillieLDaigle tweeted, "It's hard to think of positive things when I see those pictures because all I see is someone who I never truly felt I was but I guess 5-year-old me was: • Smart and eager to learn; • good at taking care of my younger brother; • more optimistic than ever." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 2,100 likes and 80 retweets (shown below, center).
Twitter[4] user @ge0kat tweeted, "to my #5YearOldSelfie 1. it’s okay to be the shy, quiet one 2. please learn how to say “no”. it won’t make you a bad person 3. you’re so much more than what people told you you’d be." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 2,800 likes and 150 retweets (shown below, right).
