About

9 to 5 Gen Z Worker TikTok refers to a viral video posted by TikToker @brielleybelly123 in which she tearfully discusses her shock and disappointment about the reality of an adult lifestyle in the U.S. In the clip, she discusses working long hours, spending hours on her commute and finding little to no time for recreational activities. The video was reposted on X in late October 2023 by people criticizing Gen Z for "whining" about a common reality for most 9 to 5 workers. However, @brielleybelly123 also gathered support from people who defended her by saying that her frustration was a normal and valid response to entering the workforce after college.

Tech reporter @Jason's reaction to the video gained criticism from many internet users who found his views to be hypocritical, considering his previous stance regarding how the U.S. government should bail out Silicon Valley Bank. For example, on October 25th, X[7] user @adamscochran made a post criticizing Jason, gathering over 8,000 likes in a day (seen below, left), while X[8] user @ParkerMolloy's post on the 26th gathered over 1,000 likes in a similar timeframe (seen below, right).

Adam Cochran (adamscochran.eth) @adamscochran Reminder, Jason is a guy who got rich on early tag along investments and is now disconnected from the reality of the world. It's easy to make fun of someone complaining about 9-5, but the reality is the economy sucks and you work yourself to the bone with no work- life balance and still can't afford s---. Gone are the days where 9-5 got you a white picket fence. Gone are the days where 9-5 meant actually switching off at 5 and not working weekends. 9-5 jobs always kinda sucked, but you could at least stomach it based on what they provided. They don't do that any more. So is this girl a bit sensitive and over dramatic? Sure. But instead of saying "toughen up princess" maybe we should be asking why our economic system is so broken that you'll work to the grindstone, own nothing, live with roommates half your life and never retire. All while Jason makes fun of you on a podcast. Guess you're just below his line... @jason ALL @Jason Oct 25 Oh princess... Subscribe 1:11 everything - it's like so extra! I think the two hour commute time is getting overlooked here. Yeah, working 9 to 5 isn't that bad once you start doing it for only a couple of weeks, but if you only get 4 hours of not work/sleep of time outside of that, it adds up quickly.

I would say you probably shouldn't pick up jobs that are 2 hours away… but given how shit the job market is today… yeah, I understand.

>9-5 job
Oh, please.
>two-hour commute
Okay, now that's actually a very serious problem. Living far from where you work is actually extremely hard. One should hope that simply moving is an option, but that's not always the case. There was a time when I used to do a 40 minute commute, and just that was a massive pain in the ass.
