About
A Group of White Men Is Called a Podcast refers to a joke which has been repeated on Twitter for several years based on the idea that many podcasts have hosts comprised entirely of white men. The joke itself became parodied in February of 2019 after journalist Lauren Duca repeated the joke as if it were an original, leading the phrase to become a copypasta and a snowclone.
Origin
The earliest known iteration of the joke was tweeted by user @Inkana[1] on July 6th, 2015 (shown below).
Spread
The joke was repeated multiple times in the following years, though it is unclear if those tweeting it believed it was an original joke or if they were knowingly repeating the joke without credit.[2][3][4]
On February 17th, 2019, journalist Lauren Duca[5] tweeted the joke, gaining over 11,000 retweets and 95,000 likes (shown below). In the ensuing thread, many Twitter users pointed out that it was not her original joke.[6][7]
This led to a surge of people tweeting the joke pretending they had come up with it in parody of Duca. For example, @MurderBryan[8] tweeted it, gaining over 3,700 retweets and 24,000 likes, and followed it up by sarcastically tweeting "I made this joke up. It’s a Murder Bryan original" (shown below, left). User Natalie Walker tweeted that in hell her job would be to log "every time someone thinks they have invented the joke 'Lin-Manuel Samantha' or 'a group of white men is called a podcast,'" gaining over 100 retweets and 2,900 likes (shown below, right).
Others turned the joke into a snowclone. For example, Twitter user @rachelmilman tweeted "a group of white men is called a kamala harris campaign," gaining over 90 retweets and 800 likes (shown below, left). User @PtakJones tweeted "A group of white men is called a Bernie Sanders please follow my account I am trying so hard," gaining over 170 retweets and 3,600 likes (shown below, right).
