About
Academically Studied Punk refers to a TikTok in which a young woman attempts to educate her followers about the origins and significance of punk culture. Prior to making her arguments, she lists her credentials to talk about the subject, including that she "academically studied punk." As her video went viral on social media, it elicited jokes, particularly her citing she "studied punk academically," which people felt was antithetical to punk culture.
Origin
On October 5th, 2020, TikTok user @madivespa[1] posted a video in which she made the argument that conservatism is antithetical to punk culture because punk was a political counterculture created by oppressed peoples to express frustration with oppressive systems. In her view, supporting the taking of rights of oppressed peoples including BIPOC, women, and LGBTQ+ people disqualified someone from being "punk." Prior to making the argument, she listed her credentials to talk about the subject, including that she was a singer in a Riot Grrrl punk band and had "academically studied punk." Her video gained over 134,000 likes on the platform.
