AI Anime Girls as Creepypasta Images refers to a series of pictures primarily made on the AI art website Stable Diffusion using img2img in which notable creepypasta imagery is remade to look like cute, anime girls and lolis. The most notable creepypasta images made into anime girls were Jeff the Killer, Smile.jpg, Squidward's Suicide and Trollge. The images trended in early 2023 across social media platforms such as Twitter, Reddit and 4chan, among others.

Origin

The first-known creepypasta anime girl made with AI art was posted on December 28th, 2022, by Redditor Jank9525 to the /r/okbuddybaka^[1] subreddit. The image was a rendition of Jeff the Killer and over the course of 23 days, it received roughly 3,400 upvotes (shown below).

Spread

The aforementioned image was shared to /r/creepypasta^[2] later on December 28th, 2022, earning roughly 1,100 upvotes in 23 days. A different Jeff the Killer iteration surfaced later with its first-known upload happening on Twitter^[3] via a tweet from user ExoticMudkipz on January 4th, 2023, who captioned the image, "what a nice lady. surely she would look the same from a distance or quickly glancing at her," and received roughly 24,900 likes in 16 days (shown below, left). It is currently unknown if ExoticMudkipz is the AI art's creator. On January 5th, Twitter^[4] user LibertyKing76 posted the same image, instead captioning it, "The human brain can detect patterns lets test it out," and gaining roughly 142,300 likes in 15 days (shown below, right).

On January 6th, 2023, Redditor ItsAzai posted an anime girl version of Trollge to /r/NovelAi,^[4] additionally including a step-by-step diagram of how they created the image using the program NovelAI (shown below). The post earned over 500 upvotes in two weeks.

Redditor ItsAzai additionally linked to Imgur^[5] where a more extensive outline of their NovelAI process was laid out, including other drafts from the process showing different anime girl iterations of Trollge (examples shown below).

Later on January 6th, 2023, the original Trollge anime girl was shared to the /r/blursedimages^[6] subreddit, gaining roughly 42,800 upvotes in two weeks. Around the same time, other iterations were surfacing on Twitter, like one tweet posted by Twitter^[7] user stwabry on January 5th, 2023, that was a reply to Twitter^[3] user LibertyKing76 and showed a Smiledog.jpg anime girl (shown below, left). The tweet received over 380 likes in 15 days. On January 10th, 2023, Twitter^[8] user yoshidenlover posted a different Smiledog.jpg iteration, however, they are unlikely to be the image's original creator due to low engagement numbers (shown below, right).

On January 13th, 2023, Twitter^[9] RetroDubsVA tweeted three of the aforementioned images with an additional one showing an anime girl as Squidward's Suicide with the caption, "I’M LOSING MY SANITY EVERY TIME I SEE THESE IMAGES MAN 😭," gaining roughly 106,200 likes in one week (shown below).

It is currently unknown who the original creator of the Squidward's Suicide iteration is, however, a different Squidward's Suicide iteration was uploaded on January 12th, 2023, by Redditor Potataly to the /r/okbuddybaka,^[10] gaining roughly 2,000 upvotes in eight days (shown below, left). Soon after, explicit Rule 34 versions of the images surfaced as well, like one of the Squidward's Suicide girl uploaded January 18th, 2023, by Twitter^[11] user 6h5t7y, gaining roughly 1,400 likes in two days (shown below, right).
