About

Amber Heard "Scissors For Fingers" refers to an answer given by Amber Heard during her June 2022 interview on The Today Show that acted as her first appearance since the Johnny Depp Defamation Trial verdict, which found her guilty on all counts. When asked about a statement from Depp's lawyer who said she was acting during her testimony, she referenced the movie Edward Scissorhands as evidence that Depp was the one giving a performance. The quote was confusing and amusing to many online, who referenced it in discussions and memes shortly after.

Origin

On June 14th, 2022, The Today Show interviewed Amber Heard in a segment titled, "Amber Heard Speaks Out," which acted as the actress' first time speaking about the trial, verdict and memes related to the entire event. Heard considered the question and then stated, "Says the lawyer for the man who convinced the world he had scissors for fingers? I'm the performer?"

The official Twitter[1] account for The Today Show posted a tweet on June 14th, that attached the clip and quote, earning roughly 347,000 views and 2,900 likes in four hours (shown below).

I think I understand the GIST of what she was trying to say. Johnny Depp is such an amazing actor he made a weird autistic robot with shears for hands seem like a believable character that people related to; that kind of skill at making people feel how you want them to feel seems like it would just about have to translate over to manipulating people in other ways.

Similarly she's defending herself from accusations that she was doing the same, using her acting skills to manipulate the court; basically saying 'yeah he said I did that, but they ALSO said I'm a terrible actor, one of those seems like it should be a lie.'

So her defense is basically "Listen, Johnny is a way, WAY better actor than me; if the court case is being influenced in somebody's favor by their acting skills, it would make a lot more sense for it to go his way."

Ironically, the complete lack of charisma with which she made that point actually supports her argument; given that she's STILL demonstrating much worse actor skills.

Granted, she could also be faking THAT… but rather than assume 5d chess horseshit trying to figure out who has the glass with the iocane powder I'd rather just rely on all the OTHER stuff that came up in court.

I think the flaw in the argument lies in assuming that lying/manipulation and acting are the same skillset, when they actually aren't.

There's some overlap in the art of deception, but acting is the art of taking something unbelievable and making it believable, while lying is the art of taking something reasonable (but untrue) and making someone believe it.

Acting requires the audience to buy into the lie voluntarily. Manipulative lying may use the person's subconscious desire to BELIEVE something is true, because the alternative is psychologically damaging, but more often than not it is simply well executed obfuscation of the truth.

"He was just trying to use his acting skills to the court to manipulate you all!"

    "Like you did."

    "No I can't act."

    "Yes we know."
