After being posted to Twitter in early May 2022, the image macro trended within multiple quote retweets and replies related to the absurdity of the meal and its price point.

Origin

On May 3rd, 2022, the book Anna: The Biography was published[6] based on the life of current Vogue magazine Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. Within the book, a detail was revealed about Wintour and her "go-to lunch," being a $77 Caprese salad with no tomatoes and steak ordered at the Palm in Tribeca, Manhattan. The detail was first revealed in an article written by the New York Post[7] on May 11th, 2022.

On May 12th, 2022, the official Twitter[1] account of The Today Show posted a tweet about a statement given to them by Wintour about her "go-to lunch" being a "$77 Caprese salad with no tomatoes and steak." Over the course of four days, the tweet received over 860 likes (shown below).

The image macro of Wintour's salad didn't receive meme attention until roughly three days later when replies and quote retweets started surfacing based on The Today Show's tweet. At first, most responses were based on plain outrage over the $77 price point, alluding to unchecked wealth and opulence from Wintour. For instance, on May 15th, 2022, Twitter[2] user dreamy_pockets replied, "$77 is two weeks worth of food so no," earning over 430 likes in one day. On May 15th, Twitter[4] user georgeciveris used the photo outside of The Today Show's tweet, referencing the Babe, You OK? snowclone by captioning it, "Babe, are you ok? You've barely touched Anna Wintour's go-to lunch of steak and caprese salad without the tomatoes," earning roughly 40,200 likes in less than a day (shown below, left). Also, on May 15th, Twitter[5] user lunch_enjoyer posted a quote retweet stating, "thats poop and cum! 😂😂😂 with throw up on top! #Damn #HeWentThere," earning roughly 3,700 likes in less than a day (shown below, right).
