Some believed that the rumors were viral marketing for the upcoming 2025 film The Conjuring: Last Rites, a series known to feature Annabelle and the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who owned the doll. While the intention behind the rumor is unclear, it was confirmed by NESPR lead investigator Dan Rivera shortly after the rumor began that she was not missing. The rumor is similar to a viral 2020 hoax claiming that Annabelle escaped from her place in the Warren Museum.

In May 2025, the Devils on the Run Tour, hosted by NESPR, began, which includes an opportunity to see the real Annabelle doll.^[1]

It is unconfirmed who started the rumor that Annabelle went missing. The earliest known post to mention the rumor was made by X^[2] / Twitter user @IchigoRyuu_19 on May 23rd, 2025, reading, "I just heard that Annabelle is missing 😭😭😭 I really hope that it's fake, please tell me it's fake….. Y'all were told 'Do not move her' by Lorraine Warren herself, and now she's missing? Have the movies taught us nothing 😭😭." The post received no engagement in the following week.

However, the rumor seems to have been started by TikToker @the_shape78, who, around the same date, posted a now-deleted video in which he claims the Annabelle doll is missing.

The video was reuploaded by X^[3] user @diorjou9 on May 24th, garnering over 11,000 views and 55 likes in six days. The TikToker^[4] still has a response video from May 24th on his page reacting to a comment about Annabelle going missing, presumably left on his now-deleted video.

The rumor spread over the following days, inspiring memes and posts claiming that Annabelle was missing in late May 2025.

For instance, on May 24th, 2025, TikToker^[5] @ladydeath100 posted a video reacting to the rumor with fear, garnering over 2 million views in six days.

That same day, TikToker^[6] @annabelle_tour, the official page of the Devils on the Run Tour, posted a video in which he confirms that Annabelle is not missing, showing her in her display case in the Warren Occult Museum.

Despite the video, the rumor continued to spread. On May 25th, TikToker^[7] @news66887 posted a video mocking the style of a news report about the Annabelle doll allegedly going missing, garnering over 13 million views in five days.

The video attempts to connect the rumor to a story of 10 prisoners in New Orleans escaping around the date that the Annabelle doll was in New Orleans.^[8]

Also on May 25th, 2025, X^[9] user @DropPopNet posted a meme of what appears to be a red haired doll somewhat resembling Annabelle doing a backflip off of a brick wall, writing, "🚨 The missing Annabelle doll was spotted chasing people in downtown Atlanta," garnering over 468,000 likes and 63,000 reposts in four days.
