AVGN Trapped In Piss Dimension or AVGN Drowning In Beer refers to a series of memes using a video clip and screenshot of James Rolfe as The Angry Video Game Nerd screaming while submerged in a pool of beer, often portrayed in memes as being a pool of urine due to its yellow color. The clip comes from the September 2020 AVGN episode on Ecco the Dolphin and started to become the subject of memes as early as January 2022, becoming increasingly popularized on X / Twitter throughout 2024, with one of the most viral examples portraying Rolfe as a "guy trapped within the piss dimension."

Origin

On September 30th, 2020, YouTuber^[1] James Rolfe uploaded an AVGN video to the Cinemassacre channel in which he plays and critiques Ecco the Dolphin. Around the 11-minute mark, The Nerd gets to a point in the game in which he has to rescue three more dolphins. Frustrated, he fills a pool with Rolling Rock beer, submerges himself in it and screams at the top of his lungs. The video garnered over 2.7 million views in four years.

On September 30th, 2020, the scene was converted into a GIF and uploaded to Know Your Meme^[2] by Duke Bruh. On March 31st, 2021, YouTuber^[3] Jay Seraphon posted the isolated scene, garnering over 1.2 million views in three years.

On January 7th, 2022, Redditor u/WhatColorIsUrPantsu posted a video from a now-deleted TikTok user, @unstablefunnimale, to the subreddit /r/antimeme^[4] in which the clip of The Nerd screaming in beer is captioned, "Genshin Impact fans when I seal them in a tub of nitric acid," garnering over 8,900 upvotes in two years. This is the earliest known memetic use of the scene.

The scene continued to inspire memes over the following years. For example, on May 27th, 2023, YouTuber^[5] Helmet mesa posted an edit of the clip referencing Half-Life, garnering over 300,000 views in a year.

On May 20th, 2024, X^[6] user @MatttGFX posted the image under a caption referencing Death Stranding, garnering over 24,000 likes in four months. On September 11th, X^[7] user @Hypetaph posted a version of the meme reading, "Micros when their macro partner is into watersports," garnering over 3,700 likes in a week.

On September 14th, X^[8] user @gregthesorcerer posted an image macro using the image along with a caption portraying Rolfe as a man stuck in the "piss dimension," writing, "Ok I have my keys, phone, wallet, is there anything I’m forgetting? | That guy I trapped within the piss dimension:" garnering over 133,000 likes in six days.

On September 15th, 2024, Instagram^[9] user new.incognito.tab posted a version of the Dramatic Crossroads meme in which the two previously stated versions of the meme lie at the end of the paths, garnering over 14,900 likes in five days. On September 17th, X user @gregthesorcerer posted a voiceover of the piss dimension meme to X,^[10] garnering over 3,700 likes in three days.
