About

Beat the Koto Nai, Oi or Dogs Haidilao Dancing refers to a series of memes set to the song "Oi" by Certified Trapper in which videos of dogs, people and characters doing the Haidilao "Subject Three" dance are set to the section of the song where Certified Trapper raps, "beat da koto nai." The trend went viral on TikTok in January 2024 with the videos often featuring a variation of the caption, "The party ended two hours ago and he's still here."

Origin

On November 7th, 2023, rapper Certified Trapper released the song and music video "Oi" in which, at the end, he raps what sounds like, "Beat the koto nai" (shown below). An original sound consisting of the song was uploaded to TikTok[1] by @darksoulbambino on November 11th, garnering around 3,400 uses in two months.

That month, a dance trend went viral known as the Haidilao "Subject Three" dance.[2] The dance is performed on request by workers at the Haidilao hot pot restaurant chain in Hong Kong and was popularized on TikTok that month, also being met with some controversy by those who thought of it as a "tacky" promotional tactic (example shown below).

As early as January 11th, 2024, edited videos of dogs dancing the Haidilao dance started going viral on TikTok, including a video of a Bichon Frise dog doing the dance uploaded by TikToker[3] @ming_gugu that day. It is unclear if this is the true origin of the video. On January 16th, TikToker[4] @vsp.dresteez posted a video setting the dog's dance to "Oi," garnering around 93,000 views in a week (shown below, left). On January 17th, TikToker[5] @fancydancy22 posted a video of a different dog doing the same dance to "Oi" under the caption, "The party ended 2 hours ago and he still here," garnering over 6.3 million views in six days (shown below, right).

The caption "the party ended X hours ago and he's still here" has been used prior to this in memes on TikTok, with the likely origin being a July 16th, 2023 video by TikToker[6] @thesummerifellinlove with over 14 million views in which a man dances erratically under the caption, "The party ended an hour ago and he's still here."

Spread

The trend gained viral spread over the following days as TikTokers uploaded further videos of people, animals and characters, including the original Haidilao workers, dancing over "Oi," often doing the Haidilao dance but not always. On January 17th, 2024, TikToker[7] @graveskii posted a video of a chihuahua dancing to the song, garnering over 1.2 million views in six days (shown below, left). On January 20th, TikToker[8] @lilkx65kid posted a video using the song that gained over 1.6 million views in three days (shown below, right).
