"We're Gonna Have To Kill This Guy, Steven" is an exploitable comic panel by Twitter artist Haus of Decline in which Steven Universe encounters Adolf Hitler and Garnet tells him that Steven can't change his mind to make him less evil and must kill him. The comic panel has been used in several redraws and fan edits, usually featuring other characters.
Origin
The comic was posted to Haus of Decline's Twitter on April 16th, 2023.[1] The comic features Steven Universe trying to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, but failing to do so. Afterward, Garnet says "I think we're gonna have to kill this guy, Steven." to which Steven only replies "Damn". The comic (shown below) received over 78,000 likes and over 7,600 retweets in over three weeks.
Spread
Variations began appearing almost immediately after Haus of Decline's post. Also on April 16th, 2023, user @yoloswagstudios[2] edited the comic so that Steven shows Hitler a picture of Abigail Shapiro, causing Hitler to kill himself. The edit gained over 200 retweets and 7,100 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). However, the majority of edits were redraws featuring different characters in the scene. For example, on May 2nd, 2023, Twitter user @tarotboys[3] redrew the comic featuring characters from Final Fantasy XIV, gaining over 700 retweets and 2,000 likes in one week (shown below, right).
Other popular examples include an April 21st, 2023 post by @poicapz[4] featuring Gohan and Piccolo from Dragon Ball that gained over 200 retweets and 1,000 likes in three weeks (shown below, left) and a May 5th post by @screamoshaymin[5] featuring the Pokรฉmon Riolu and Pikachu that gained over 600 retweets and 2,300 likes in three days (shown below, right).
'Comfort Character' Redraw Trend
On December 9th, 2023, @g4teway31[6] posted a redraw of the image with their OC and Lagoona from the toy franchise Monster High, and encouraged others to redraw the meme with their comfort characters. The image gained over 13,000 retweets and 30,000 likes over the next week, inspiring numerous redraws in the quote-reposts while also inspiring redraws on Tumblr.
On December 12th, X[7] user @Lorav02 posted a version of the meme featuring Freddy Fazbear and Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad, garnering over 3,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). On December 14th, X[8] user @BeckyMastery posted a version featuring Spider-Man 2099 and Hello Kitty, garnering over 33,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).
