Several days later, conservative podcast host Ben Shapiro mocked Sanders for purchasing food at a grocery store, joking that it goes against Sanders' politics. He wrote,[2] "Bernie in the 1980s: 'It’s funny, sometimes American journalists talk about how bad a country is, that people are lining up for food. That is a good thing! In other countries people don’t line up for food: the rich get the food and the poor starve to death.'Bernie today." The post received more than 800 retweets, 5,800 likes and 3,000 comments (shown below, left).

Many criticized and mocked Shapiro's tweet, stating that they did not understand the connection between the quote and the photograph, as people must purchase food for sustenance, even politicians, like Sanders. Twitter[4] user @shaun_jen retweeted Shapiro and wrote, "genuinely no idea how this quote and picture are supposed to be related. help me out, folks." The tweet received more than 365 retweets and 5,200 likes in 24 hours (shown below, center). Others ironically commented on how effective Shapiro's insult was (example below, right).

Shapiro seemed to accept issues and criticism with the joke by responding to a comment "Eh, all the jokes can't be winners" and acknowledging the "possibility" that he is "just not funny" (shown below).[5]

On May 1st, The Daily Dot [6] published an article about the tweet.
