About
Candy Bar USB refers to an exploitable series of images in which USB flash drives are disguised as candy bars. In the exploitables, people say that instead of handing out candy on Halloween, they are handing out various audio clips in the drive.
Origin
On April 18th, 2011, ZOMG Candy[1] posted an image of a USB drive disguised as a Twix bar as part of a review of a Twix product (shown below).
In late October 2015, a post pairing the image with a caption of a person hyping their mixtape began circulating around Tumblr (shown below). The post was originally by user yungrenaissance,[2] since deactivated. The post gained over 65,000 notes.
Spread
On October 31st, 2015,[3] a variation on the mixtape joke with a Kit Kat Bar USB appeared on Imgur (shown below).
On December 31st, 2016, Instagram user desert_hobo_[4] uploaded an edit to the Kit Kat image, changing "mixtape" to Bee Movie (shown below), marking one of the earliest edits to turn the image into an exploitable.
Over the course of the following year, other edits appeared involving various other humorous pieces of audio, with a surge of edits appearing around Halloween that year. On October 22nd, 2017, a Facebook parody page of Kim Jong Un posted an edit[5] that gained over 1,700 likes and reactions (shown below, left). On October 31st, 2017, an image referencing Marxist Literature was posted to /r/MemeEconomy[6]
