Based off of the impossible eyeware donned by Gorde La Forge from the hit television series Star Trek, this meme is used, in most places, where the user has trouble depicting intended imagery.

The original image of Gorde La Forge (played by LeVar Burton) shows the character in his intended costume. The eyewear itself is called VISOR and is intended to simulate light changes for the blind (this is a fictional piece of technology).

The earliest surfacing of this meme was found in 2003: "http://www.kaitaia.com/funny/g2/v/ForumPictures/cantseeshit/fd78778c.jpg.html":at kaitaia.com, and later gained popularity in it's YTMND page in 2005.

The meme has gained popularity as of recently and is often used in the case of users submitting screenshots that are simply too dark.
