What's The Deal With Cerveza Cristal In 'Star Wars'? Memes About Chilean Beer Ads In Movies Explained

Featured Episode

About

Cerveza Cristal refers to memes that parody the organic placement of advertisements for beer brand Cerveza Cristal in the 2003 airing of the original Star Wars trilogy in Chile. In memes, bottles and cans of Cerveza Cristal are edited into various movie scenes.

Origin

In 2003 and 2004, Chilean TV network Canal 13 aired the original Star Wars trilogy films. The network cut advertisements for the Chilean beer brand Cerveza Cristal directly into the film in an organic and comical fashion, inserting shots of Star Wars characters, including Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Palpatine, holding bottles and cans of Cerveza Cristal in their hands. On July 9th, 2009, YouTube[1][2][3][4] user emetwistable archived five Cerveza Cristal commercials from the "Fuerza es con Cerveza Cristal" ad campaign on YouTube (one video since removed), where they received over 250,000 views in 14 years combined (shown below).

Cerveza Cristal production company, CCU, later used similar organic advertisements for local airings of American Beauty and Gladiator.

On February 22nd, 2024, X[9] / Twitter user @DESCONOCIDOHK posted one of the advertisements, commenting with the brief story of the ad campaign. The post (shown below) received nearly a million views and over 2,400 reposts and 8,300 likes in two weeks (shown below).

On February 28th, 2024, Spanish news website Vida Extra[5] published an article about the advertisements, linking the YouTube videos.

On March 2nd, 2024, X[6] user @heyitswindy made a thread about the precedent, sharing dubbed versions of the clips. The first post in the thread (shown below) accumulated over 49,000 reposts and 245,000 likes in two days.

Spread

In the following day, the ad campaign became a viral subject of discussion on X / Twitter, with several posts and jokes about it going viral. For example, on March 2nd, 2024, X[7] user @TheSpaceshipper quoted the opening post of the thread with a Somehow Palpatine Returned joke. The post (shown below) received over 1,500 reposts and 12,000 likes in two days.

On March 4th, 2023, X[8] / Twitter user @edsbs posted a still image of Paul Atreides shouting in the recently released Dune: Part Two, captioning it, "¡CERVEZAAAAAA CRISTAAAALL!" The post (shown below) received over 2,800 reposts and 25,000 likes in one day.

¡CERVEZAAAAAA CRISTAAALL!

In the following day, edits in which bottles and cans of Cerveza Cristal were edited into various scenes were posted on X / Twitter.

I just want to mention a few things, taking advantage of the fact that I am Chilean and, therefore, I am from the country where this meme originates.

1 – The name of the channel where this commercial was broadcasted is called, literally, "Canal 13". Although its English translation would be Channel 13, the proper name of the channel is still "Canal 13", therefore, it should not be translated.

2 – I want to share a link of a Chilean media that contacted the head of marketing of CCU (Company owner of Cerveza Cristal) that explains the origin of the idea of these commercials.

I hope this information helps to make this entry more complete.
