Chengdu Girlfriend Dance Challenge, also known as the Chengdu Beauty Dance Challenge and Honey Dance Challenge (挑战闺蜜团), is a series of TikTok videos in which a group of friends each show off a short dance to a clip of the EDM song "Superstar (Miami Classic Mix)" by Chris Decay feat. DJ Ella.

Origin

On June 29th, 2018, Chris Decay uploaded the song "Superstar (Miami Classic Mix)" to YouTube (shown below). The video gained 33,579 views and 1,400 likes within one year.

On March 26th, 2019, TikTok user Joyce_柚子[6] uploaded a video of herself and several friends from Chengdu, China [1][2] dancing one by one to a clip of the song (shown below).

Spread

On March 31st, 2019, the TikTokers YouTube channel uploaded a compilation entitled "Chengdu Beauty Dance Challenge Tik Tok Meme Compilation" (shown below). The video gained more than 6,600 views in two weeks.

In early April 2019, the dance trend became popular among fashionable friend groups.[3] The sound was used in over 144,300 videos within a few weeks. On Douyin, the second[4] and third[5] most popular posts feature footage of a bear wiggling around and another girlfriend group mimicking the original video (shown below).

On April 8th, YouTuber David Dobrik uploaded his own rendition performed with several friends to TikTok (shown below, left). The video gained over 404,700 likes in four days. The same day, TikTok user @theleahwood uploaded a duet one of the original videos attempting to copy each move exactly (shown below, right). The video gained over 350,600 likes in four days.
