About
Co-Star Notifications are parodies of push notifications sent to a Co-Star Astrology[1] app user's phone that includes a short horoscope usually using cryptic emojis or bold/ intense messages. The app CoโStar Astrology allows the user to read their birth chart, compare it with friends and receive Astrology updates.
Origin
On April 17th, 2018, Twitter user @ktkittelson[2] posted a screenshot of a Co-Star notification with the caption "i love co-starโs cryptic push notifications" (shown below). This was the first instance of someone publicly commenting on their unusual notifications.
Spread
On October 9th, 2018, Twitter user @shezdying[3] tweeted "co-star rly notifications really are like 'fix ur life u dumb bitch.. the stars hate fags." and i'm rly like "Tea <3'" which became the first parody of a Co-Star notification (shown below, left). The tweet gained 99 likes in five months. On March 9th, Twitter user @matfock[4] tweeted, "Co-Star last year: your day at a glance โ ๐๐ธ๐ฅฐ๐ Co-Star now: your day at a glance โ If you donโt get out of bed right now I am personally going to crawl out of the phone and beat the shit out of you, you lazy bitch" (shown below, right).
On March 16th, Twitter users began creating a notification imitation format on twitter like @misszupancic[5] who posted the format that includes the text "๐ฌ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ด๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ have you considered killing yourself?" (shown below, left). The tweet gained 52 likes in two days. Twitter user @DYamashige[6] used a similar format using the text "๐ฌ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ด๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ Fuck You" (shown below, right).
