About
"The Good Place" is an American situational comedy that ran from 2016-2020 on NBC about a woman who must overcome her immorality when she is mistakenly placed in "The Good Place", a heaven-like version of the afterlife. "Confident Chidi" rose to memehood in January and February 2020. The meme speaks to those who tend not to speak in groups until something that they feel they can speak educatedly about.
Origin
In the season 4 episode, "You've Changed, Man", Chidi, a character who is normally very indecisive, wakes up from having his memories restored very uncharacteristically confident in himself, and proceeds to talk at length and engagingly about philosophy, a field he is very knowledgeable in.
Spread
Viewers noticed Chidi's character shift, seeing it as admirable and something to be replicated. Many twitter users commented on it, wishing that they could be that confident in their daily lives. "The Good Place" posted a few of these memes of their instagram page on January 18, 2020, and Tumblr user @rocktheholygrail reposted them onto their Tumblr, spawning it's spread there.
