Crying Evan Hansen refers to a screenshot from Dear Evan Hansen in which Ben Platt, as the title character, is sobbing. The screenshot was mocked online for Platt's expression, particularly as many feel he looks too old to play a teenager, and used as a reaction and photoshop memes.

Origin

On September 16th, 2021, Universal Pictures posted the final trailer for Dear Evan Hansen. At 3:27 in the trailer, Ben Platt can be seen weeping (shown below).

Spread

On September 24th, 2021, Twitter user @lonelyt00thpick^[1] posted a still frame from the weeping scene (shown below, left). The following day, user @gutznotguts^[2] posted the same screenshot, saying "There is no way this is a real screenshot from Dear Evan Hansen," gaining over 50 retweets and 600 likes (shown below, right).

Users soon began making memes with the image. For example, user @maine_gov^[3] posted the image with the caption "just remembered massachusetts exists," gaining over 350 retweets and 5,200 likes (shown below, left). User @filmgal^[4] posted a photoshopped still from Midsommar, gaining over 540 retweets and 6,800 likes (shown below, right). The meme was covered by the Daily Dot.^[5]
