Cucumber Lime Gatorade is a light-green-colored Gatorade flavor often referenced in ironic memes on Instagram, iFunny and TikTok related to the flavor being perceived by some as "gross" and the people who enjoy cucumber lime Gatorade having "bad taste," or on the contrary, having a superior taste to other Gatorade enjoyers. The flavor was first released in 2011 and memes first surfaced about it in 2013 on iFunny. In 2022, cucumber lime Gatorade memes trended en masse.

Origin

The cucumber lime flavor of Gatorade was originally launched sometime in 2011 in accordance with Google Trends^[1] when related searches for it began appearing online. On July 31st, 2013, iFunnyer^[2] chitos_2016 posted the earliest known cucumber lime Gatorade meme referencing the flavor, earning over 50 smiles in nine years (shown below).

Spread

Discussions and memes on the flavor continued sporadically appearing online over the next several years. For example, on April 30th, 2017, Twitter^[3] user UncleChaps tweeted about cucumber lime Gatorade being "buttcheeks," earning over 550 likes in five years. On January 26th, 2018, Twitter^[4] user spacetwinks tweeted about needing cucumber lime Gatorade after "swallowing," earning roughly 1,000 likes in four years (shown below, left). On February 1st, 2020, Twitter^[5] user pissboymcgee tweeted, "the cucumber lime gatorade is far and away the best flavor out there," earning roughly 1,600 likes in two years (shown below, right).

On March 28th, 2020, an unknown Redditor posted a meme to /r/memes ^[6] that captioned a picture of Charles II of Spain with, "when you try that cucumber lime gatorade," earning 50 upvotes before being deleted by the Redditor. Reposts were made to iFunny^[7] on the same day as well as on eBaum's World^[8] days later. On August 19th, 2021, Redditor Sputnik_Rising posted a meme to /r/memes^[9] that captioned a Will Smith screencap from iRobot in which he's drinking from a cup and wincing with, "Lime Cucumber Gatorade Drinkers trying to convince you it's good." Over the course of one year, the meme received roughly 14,000 upvotes (shown below, right).

Continuing into 2022, cucumber lime Gatorade memes received increased engagement across platforms. The trend peaked in August 2022, predominantly started by TikToker^[10] sean.oswald on August 15th, 2022, when he used TikTok's "Photos" slideshow feature to post multiple cucumber lime Gatorade memes, gaining roughly 1.2 million plays and 212,300 likes in three weeks (examples shown below).
