About
Cultist-chan is the name of an original character set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe she is a female human, and a Chaos worshipper; she has shoulder-length purple hair, fang-like teeth, and tattoos of the symbols of all five Chaos Gods (including Malal), and carries on her back a cross in the shape of the Chaos United symbol; she's also characterized by her speech impediment and her erratic behaviour. Appeared first in the 4chan board /tg/, she became popular enough to spawn many fanarts across various social media.
Origin
The exact date of Cultist-chan's first appearance is dubious, although it is commonly admitted to be within the 2007-2008 timeframe[1]. The earliest findable occurence of this character online is a drawing[2] (see below) uploaded on September 17th, 2008 on DeviantArt by Mr-Culexus (also known as misterculexus), who reclaimed it as the original 4chan artwork.
According to him, she was the result of a member of /tg/ requesting a drawing of a character to him, phrasing the details of this request ("A female cultist of chaos feeding waffles to a spawn, preferably multi-headed") in such a way that this artist, mostly known for his Warhammer 40,000 content, would be tricked into designing a character typical of Vampire: The Masquerade; specifically, a Tzemetze vampire] feeding a vohzd. Originally, she was simply named "Cultist", but soon gained via popular consensus the nickname "Cultist-chan", which sticked to this day.
In a following fanart[4] (below, left), Mr-Culexus posted a drawing based on another request: a slumber party attended by various female Warhammer characters. Upon being asked by a fellow 4chan user where the Cultist was, he was inspired to draw a bonus picture[5] (below, right) of her sitting next to a telephone, sadly waiting for someone to invite her. This drawing helped to solidify her personality as an awkward dork.
Before Cultist-chan gained traction on other websites, her popularity on 4chan was boosted by her inclusion as a recurring character in High School 40K[6], a popular humoristic Warhammer fanfiction.
