#DarkWoke, also known as Dark Woke, is a joke hashtag and slang term that gained traction on X / Twitter in January 2025. After Donald Trump was reelected as the 47th President of the United States, many anti-conservative internet users began sharing memes and jokes about being "Dark Woke," espousing violence, taking glee in the misfortune of conservatives negatively affected by Trump's policies and breaking away from liberal ideas about civility. The hashtag "#DarkWoke" began trending online after Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) posted a tweet asking Libs of TikTok, "Oh, are you triggered?" leading X user @ProgDirectorate to tweet, "proto-#DarkWoke […] who will the first democrat to call republicans retarded be?" The phrasing "Dark Woke" is potentially inspired by jokes about Dark Brandon.

Origin

On April 26th, 2016, Twitter^[14] user @gmorningflowers made a post that read, "I'm coining DarkWoke: using "SJ lingo" to say antiSJ things."

The hashtag #DarkWoke can be traced back to May 2022, when Twitter^[8] user @ThinkLearnVote wrote, "Woke politics is the opposite of MAGA politics. Extreme left vs. extreme right. #DarkWoke #DarkMAGA."

Other Twitter users were more literal about taking inspiration from Dark Brandon for the term #DarkWoke, as seen in a December 4th, 2022 tweet by @RoyHinkleyPhD.^[9]

In late 2024, the hashtags #DarkWokeness and the term Dark Woke saw renewed usage on Twitter, with screenshots showing tweets from X users @DarkWokeness and @tenbillionswans using the phrase in November 2024. Other X users like @njsilvadyne also made several notable tweets using the hashtags #DarkWokeness^[11][12][13] in November and December 2024. Also in December 2024, @RottingShell^[10] tweeted, "#DarkWoke vs #SoyRight who you got ?"

On January 19th, 2025, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted a tweet^[1] replying to Libs of TikTok, saying, "Oh, are you triggered? Cry more." The post gathered over 400,000 likes in five days.

On January 20th, Twitter / X^[2] user @ProgDirectorate quoted the post, writing, "proto-#DarkWoke…maybe #GreyWoke? who will the first democrat to call republicans retarded be?" The post gathered over 1,000 likes in four days.

Jokes about #DarkWoke continued to gain traction in January 2025, as seen in a January 22nd tweet by X user @ettingermentum. After X^[3] user @Matthewtravis08 posted a tweet that read, "When my MAGA family members begin to struggle financially, I will not help them […] Life is about choices. They made theirs, I’ve made mine," @ettingermentum^[4] quoted the post with the hashtag #DarkWoke, gathering over 4,000 likes in two days.

On January 22nd, 2025, X^[5] user @BlobMenendez quoted a post in which @luvmoonv wrote, "my Grandma voted for Trump so I made sure she fell down the stairs 🙄," writing, "#beastmode #DarkWoke." The post gathered over 100,000 likes in two days.

On January 21st, X^[6] user @JohnBasham made a post appealing to Donald Trump to help his family after they moved across the country for his wife's nursing job at a veterans' clinic, only for her to lose the opportunity due to Trump's federal hiring freeze executive order. The replies to the post saw non-conservatives mocking the X user for supporting a candidate whose policies negatively affected him.

X^[7] user @ByYourLogic quoted the post, writing, "replies are an absolute bonanza of #DarkWoke #DarkWokeRising."
