Disclaimer: You Will Not Laugh is an image and GIF caption based on a line uttered by drill sergeant Hartman in the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket. Used since October 2022, in December 2022, the image, captioned, Grandayy Video Disclaimer, achieved virality on Twitter as it was spammed under content creator Grandayy's posts.

Origin

On June 26th, 1987, the war drama film Full Metal Jacket, directed by Stanley Kubrick, premiered.^[1] In one scene of the film, drill sergeant Hartman punches Private J.T. "Joker" Davis in the stomach and shouts at him after he cracks a joke (scene shown below).

You will not laugh, you will not cry, you learn by the numbers, I will teach you! Now get up! Get on your feet!

On February 13th, 2017, Tenor^[2] user cali7 uploaded a GIF based on the scene, captioned with the line.

Prior to October 2nd, 2020, an unknown user, likely on iFunny, posted a GIF caption meme based on the GIF, captioning it, "Grandayy video disclaimer." The meme was a part of a larger group of memes meant to mock meme creators Grandayy and Dolan Dark over their content, regarded by some as unfunny, with the memes popularized on iFunny, the /r/okbuddyretard subreddit and other communities.

On October 2nd, iFunny^[3] user affectioncelljrlol posted a still frame of the GIF, which is the earliest found copy of it online (shown below, left). Also that day, Instagram^[4] user _centipedo posted the image caption, with the post gaining over 490 likes in two years. On October 14th, Tenor^[5] user kudner then posted a remade GIF caption (shown below, right).

Spread

On October 13th, 2020, Tenor^[6] user robertmalo posted the earliest found derivative version of the meme, changing the caption to "Shrek's Swamp disclaimer." While the meme did not achieve viral recognition until December 2022, more versions were posted on iFunny, Instagram and Tenor before that. For example, on February 4th, 2022, Tenor^[7] user RiftSTW posted a meme mocking the /r/FortniteBR subreddit (shown below, right).

On November 17th, 2022, meme creator Grandayy tweeted^[8] a Can't Even X in Ohio meme, which gained over 1,600 retweets and 22,400 likes in one month. Starting approximately on December 10th, 2022, hundreds of Twitter users replied to the video with the "Grandayy Video Disclaimer" version of the meme, with some of the comments gaining thousands of likes in 10 days (examples shown below).^[9][10][11]

On December 12th, Redditor^[12] userthatlikesphub posted a scroll-down video of the replies that gained over 830 upvotes in the /r/ontheledgeandshit subreddit in eight days. On December 13th, Twitter^[13] user @upblissed posted another scroll-down video, which gained over 69,900 views, 90 retweets and 5,400 likes in one week (shown below).
