Disco Elysium Evrart's Chair is an extremely uncomfortable chair from the 2019 video game Disco Elysium that has a chance of killing the player in the event he fails a check and is low on health. Dying to the chair has often been mentioned in both positive and negative reviews of the game, while the chair has been a prominent subject of references within the game's fandom and in memes online.

Origin

On October 15th, 2019, the role-playing video game Disco Elysium was released.^[1] During the initial hours of gameplay, the player encounters the character Evrart Claire, a union boss, who will only speak to you if you agree to sit in an uncomfortable-looking chair in his office. Soon after sitting down, the player has to pass a pain threshold check which, if failed, will result in the chair dealing one point of damage due to extreme discomfort. If the player is already low on health, the damage can be lethal, with the protagonist dying of a heart attack (scene shown below).

Spread

Following the release of the game, posts about dying to the chair were shared by players on Steam,^[2] Twitter^[3] and Reddit.^[4] For example, on October 18th, 2019, Steam user Cindy, the Woofie made a Steam forum post inquiring about why they were dying to a chair (shown below).

The chair later became a subject of references within the game's fandom. For example, on August 9th, 2020, Redditor^[5] Flask_of_Anti-Matter made a post that received over 110 upvotes in the /r/DiscoElysium subreddit in six months (shown below, left). On June 15th, 2021, Tumblr^[6] user ultra-balkan-the-ovosh drew a cartoon based on the scene that gained over 680 likes and reblogs in one year (shown below, right).

On February 23rd, 2022, the official Disco Elysium Twitter^[7] account shared a screenshot of a positive and a negative review of the game, both of which mentioned dying to the chair. The post received over 4,600 retweets and 48,700 likes in three months (shown below).
