Don't Do It Fam, Look at This or Hard To Believe That Was Almost 20 Years Ago is an exploitable Wojak comic and meme format in which a Wojak is about to hang himself with a noose but is then shown an image of something that makes life worth living, with the final panel showing him reclining in a chair thinking, "Hard to believe that was almost 20 years ago." The comic was originally posted to Reddit in 2018 and became increasingly popularized as a meme format over the following years.

Origin

On December 27th, 2018, Redditor u/LChenpion posted a four-panel Wojak comic to the subreddit /r/memes^[1] that garnered over 600 upvotes in six years.

In the first panel, a Wojak is shown putting a noose around his neck. In the second, an arm with a piece of paper enters the frame and says, "Don't do it, fam! Look at this." In the third panel, the phrase, "Your mom will be sad," is shown on the piece of paper. In the fourth, we see the Wojak leaning back in a chair saying, "Hard to believe that was almost 20 years ago."

After being posted to Reddit's /r/memes in late December 2018, the meme format became increasingly popularized over the following years.

On December 30th, 2018, 9GAG^[2] user cookieastro68 posted a version of the meme that garnered over 4,200 upvotes in six years. On July 20th, 2023, X^[3] user @WH0LELOTTAMIKEY posted a version of the meme in which a blue Wojak appears on the sheet of paper, writing, "I think about this image a lot actually," garnering over 26,000 likes in a year.

On October 14th, 2024, X^[4] user @NorthernPuffer posted a version of the meme in which an image of a rabbit edited to look like a star appears on the sheet of paper, garnering over 35,000 likes in two days. On October 15th, X^[5] user @eloslingshot posted a version of the meme that gained over 3,800 likes in a day.
