About

Dracotok is a community on TikTok dedicated to Draco Malfoy, played by actor Tom Felton, from the Harry Potter series of films. The community is collected largely under the hashtags #dracotok and #dracotiktok, and became widely popular on the platform in September of 2020. Videos under the hashtags include people cosplaying as Malfoy, acting out skits where they interact with Malfoy (often romantically), and imitations of Malfoy.

Origin

Harry Potter-themed videos have been popular on TikTok since at least 2019, including things like skits, cosplays, and lip-syncing videos (examples shown below, left and right). Videos under the hashtag #harrypotter have collected over 22.3 billion views as of October 21st, 2020.

It's unknown why Malfoy-specific videos rose to prominence in 2020, or what the first Dracotok video is. While the trend spiked in popularity in early September of 2020, there are examples of the trend from as early as mid-August. On August 18th, 2020, TikToker kelseydaffodil uploaded a video tagged #dracotok, garnering over 2.6 million views in 2 months (shown below, left). On August 29th, TikToker unfiltered.elliee uploaded the first part in a series of Dracotok videos acting as if she was Malfoy's best friend, garnering over 341 thousand views in just under 2 months (shown below, right).

In early September of 2020, Dracotok videos started taking off on TikTok, leading the hashtag #DracoTok to the trending page. A number of Dracotok videos from early September went viral on the platform. On September 7th, TikToker tatieonna uploaded a video under the hashtag #dracotok. which received over 10 million views in just over a month (shown below, left). On September 8th, TikToker isabelle_rose_ uploaded a skit playing someone who hooked up with Malfoy, garnering over 29 million views by October 21st (shown below, right).

On September 10th, TikToker torimalfoyyy uploaded a video taken from a TikTok live stream where Felton admits he's heard of DracoTok but has never checked it out (shown below, left). On September 13th, Tom Felton commented on tatieonna's video, "First #dracotok video I saw …." On September 15th, Buzzfeed[] reported on DracoTok and Tom Felton discovering it. On September 21st, Tom Felton posted a video to his TikTok page captioned, "POV: watching @t22felton react to your #dracotok videos," in which he makes a variety of reactions ranging from horrified to laughter (shown below, right). The video gained over 25 million views in a month. On September 22nd, Dexerto[1] published an article on Felton discovering DracoTok.

Following his discovery of DracoTok, Felton began duetting to certain DracoTok videos. On October 11th, Felton posted his first two DracoTok duets, garnering over 16.3 million and 16.8 million views in under a month respectively (shown below, left and right). On October 14th, ETCanada[2] posted an interview with Felton, where he expresses his love of DracoTok. On October 18th, Entertainment Tonight[3] reported on Felton discovering DracoTok, followed by Nicki Swift[4] on the 19th.

As of October 21st, videos under the hashtags #DracoTok and #DracoTikTok have over 3.5-billion and 1.1-billion views respectively.
