Dutch van der Linde or Dutch is a major character from 2010 action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption and its 2018 prequel Red Dead Redemption 2. In late 2018, memes featuring the character were widely circulated in the gaming community, often based on his memorable quotes such as "Arthur, I have a plan", "We just need money" and "Tahiti".

Origin

On May 18, 2010, action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption by Rockstar was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game consoles^[1]. In the game, character Dutch van der Linde is one of the major antagonists and a former leader of the gang which the main protagonist is tasked to hunt down.

On October 26, 2018, Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption 2^[2], a prequel of the first game, with Dutch van der Linde returning as one of the major characters. In the prequel, Dutch is the leader of the Van der Linde Gang, or the Dutch's Boys, who are on the run from the authorities after a botched heist.

Through the events of the game, Dutch often explains his decisions and actions to the main protagonist Arthur Morgan with "having a plan" and suggest that Arthur "has a little faith" in him^[3]. In the later parts of the game, Dutch reveals his intention for the gang to move to Tahiti to become mango farmers, for which the gang would "need more money".

Following the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, memes mocking memorable quotes said by the character gained significant popularity in the gaming community, particularly on Twitter and in /r/gaming and /r/reddeadredemption^[4] subreddits (examples below).

On November 17, 2018, YouTube^[5] user maryjo posted a video compilation of Red Dead Redemption 2 scenes in which Dutch talks about having a plan.
