Overview
Alexis Vega Controversy refers to a publication by Mexican footballer Alexis Vega mocking the rival Atlas Fútbol Club. An alleged screenshot of Vega's Instagram account was shared on May 2023, showing a Grand Theft Auto meme of his face replacing a character who walks a dog that has been photoshopped with the face of Julián Quiñones, from the rival football team. The image was shared by a large number of users on social media, especially Twitter, leading to a series of sanctions applied by the Mexican Soccer Federation on Alexis and his current team_Club Deportivo Guadalajara_, also known as Chivas.

Grand Theft Auto Instagram Post
On May 16th, 2023, Mexican football player Alexis Vegas allegedly shared a reels post on his Instagram[1] account (already deleted) showing his soccer play against rival player Julián Quiñones. The video ends with a montage of Alexis as a Grand Theft Auto character holding a dog leash, with the animal's face replaced by Julián's. Twitter[2] page @porktendencia shared the deleted post (seen below, garnering 439 likes and 24 retweets in three days.

Due to this incident, Alexis Vega decided to contact Julian Quinones to apologize[3] and then inform the public opinion on his social networks. He posted[4] on May 16th, 2023, a screenshot of a conversation with Julian Quinones showing who was the person behind the meme the player had shared on his Instagram account. The post (seen below) garnered 6,600 likes and 636 retweets in three days.
Online Reactions
In response to Alexis' video mocking the rival player, people went to Twitter in defense of Julian Quinones. For instance, Twitter[5] user @DeFutbolMX1 compared both footballers' achievements, showing that Quinones has a better career than Alexis. The post (seen below), uploaded on May 16th, garnered 1,639 likes and 225 retweets in three days.
Alexis' supporters also shared tweets in defense of the football player. For example, user @Gera_Chavezm[6] posted on May 16th, a tweet saying "Alexis has already come out to deny everything," which garnered 28 likes in three days. (seen below)
