Overview

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 AI Cards Controversy refers to allegations that the 2024 FPS game Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 (COD: BO6) features AI-generated images on the video game's paid cosmetics items. The claims gained viral attention after the game's release in early November 2024, especially on Reddit and YouTube, where fans shared alleged evidence of the AI artwork found while playing it and controversy ensued.

Background

On November 5th, 2024, Redditor u/Pyroraptor23[1] posted a series of banners from the Call of Duty Black Ops 6 game on the /r/Steam subreddit, alleging the artwork was created using artificial intelligence. The post (seen below) amassed more than 16,000 upvotes and 1,300 comments in three days.

Black Ops 6 AI-Generated Prestige Emblems

Even before the viral thread by Redditor u/Pyroraptor23 post about the alleged usage of AI in the Black Ops 6 game, YouTuber[2] Blame Truth uploaded a video on October 20th, 2024, claiming generative AI artwork for the prestige emblems on the Call of Duty game, which garnered over 59,000 views and 3,700 likes in a month (seen below).



Online Reactions

In the weeks following the Call of Duty Black Ops 6 release, the AI content claims featured in the game became a viral topic on the internet. For example, on October 20th, 2024, YouTuber[3] @GHOSTOFEIGHT posted a video commenting on the prestige emblems being made by AI allegations (seen below), which received roughly 9,000 views and 610 likes in a month.



On November 6th, 2024, Redditor u/e42e[4] posted an alleged AI banner to the Black Ops 6 subreddit, writing, "How does AI slop this bad make it into the game?" The post received six comments in two days (seen below).
